Santino Ferrucci of A. J. Ferrucci recently earned a third-place finish at Road America, marking his second podium and continuing a streak of four top-five results in a row. However, the driver of the #14 Sexton Properties Chevrolet remains determined to reach the top step of the podium rather than settle for strong finishes. Early in the season, his best outcome was 11th at Long Beach, contrasting with a breakthrough top-five finish at the Indianapolis 500, signaling improvement after a difficult start.

Despite early setbacks, Ferrucci emphasized that the team’s overall speed was consistently strong from the beginning, but they faced multiple obstacles beyond their control.

“We were just a bit unlucky, more than anything. The way the Indy GP went, and Barber — even Long Beach — we had pace at all three events. We just had a fuel issue at Barber, hit the wall at Long Beach, which wasn’t great. And then at Indy GP, we didn’t run any practice or warm-up. We literally just qualified and raced. We had a couple of mechanical issues that were completely out of our control,” said Ferrucci

Ferrucci will return to compete at the Iowa Speedway doubleheader from July 11 to 13, where he hopes to build on his recent form and potentially claim his first victory.

Challenges Faced in Preparation for the Indianapolis 500

Leading up to his seventh Indianapolis 500 appearance, Ferrucci openly expressed frustration with the difficulties encountered during practice sessions. While championship leader Alex Palou set an impressive pace on the second day of on-track activities with a top lap speed of 227.546 mph, Ferrucci struggled to find similar rhythm, ranking 33rd with a lap of 220.566 mph, nearly at the bottom of the speed charts.

In an interview on IndyCar Pit Lane during that session, Ferrucci described his disappointment with the setups and adjustments made, noting that time spent running in traffic negatively impacted the car’s balance and his own confidence.

“I was pretty happy in the Open Test, but that was on a road course car. Now, the second day in the speedway car, probably our fourth run, I felt comfortable with what we did overnight, then in clean air decided to hop on the back of a train to get a balanced read.” (0:12 onwards)

Due to ongoing frustrations, Ferrucci decided to revert to last year’s car, expressing loss of faith in attempts to optimize the new machine for the race.

“I am going back to last year’s car. I am fed up with trying to make this work. There was light at the end of the tunnel, but not anymore,” he added.

Solid Results Despite Struggles at Indianapolis

At the prestigious 108th Indianapolis 500, Ferrucci’s efforts showed progress as he advanced to the Firestone Fast Six and earned a strong P6 starting position. Throughout the intense 200-lap race, he maintained competitive pace and finished in eighth place, extending his record of consecutive top-10 finishes at the event. This performance demonstrated his growing consistency despite earlier challenges in the season.
