Jordan Vandergriff is set to drive Shawn Reed Racing’s Top Fuel dragster again as a replacement driver for the injured Shawn Reed at the Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis during Labor Day Weekend. This opportunity follows Vandergriff’s recent success filling in for Reed last week at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota.
Reed is recovering after a severe crash at the Northwest Nationals in Seattle, which left him with two broken ribs and an amputated left index finger, preventing him from competing in the current event.
Recent Performance and Standings Impact
When Vandergriff first took over the dragster for Reed at Brainerd, he secured a first-round victory and ultimately finished fifth, providing key points that contribute directly to Reed’s standing. According to NHRA regulations, all points earned by Vandergriff while driving for Reed count toward Reed’s championship pursuit.
The combined Reed/Vandergriff team currently ranks 10th in the NHRA standings, holding a solid 168-point lead over 11th place Ida Zetterstrom. Reed is within striking distance of the top eight, trailing ninth-place Steve Torrence by 94 points and eighth-place Josh Hart by 96 points. A strong showing by Vandergriff at the U.S. Nationals could significantly narrow these gaps.

The event carries extra weight as a points-and-a-half weekend, with a maximum of 191 points available for a flawless performance, including event victory, top qualifying position, quickest time in each qualifying session, and participation points.
Reed Shares His Thoughts on Vandergriff’s Return
Shawn Reed explained his decision to have Vandergriff drive in Indianapolis, reflecting on the ease with which Vandergriff rejoined the team in Brainerd.
“This was not a difficult decision,”
Reed said, expressing confidence in Vandergriff’s ability to integrate seamlessly and contribute immediately. He is targeting a comeback for himself starting with the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs in Reading, Pennsylvania, from September 12-14.
Reed also emphasized the personal nature of his choice.
“To be honest, I’ve had quite a few offers, most of which came with money attached, and as tempting as it was, I knew in my gut that I wanted it to be Jordan once again. He’s excited, he’s thankful, he’s appreciative, and quite frankly, did a good job. He’s already fitted for the car; the guys liked him and wanted to see him back.”
Background on Vandergriff’s Career and Current Role
Before stepping in at Brainerd, Vandergriff’s last Top Fuel starts were in 2019, totaling 11 appearances. Since then, he has been involved with NHRA as part of the NHRA.tv broadcast crew during the 2024 season. His return as a replacement driver highlights his ongoing connection to the sport and readiness to support the team in times of need.
Outlook for the Championship Battle
With the U.S. Nationals offering a pivotal chance to earn a substantial number of points, Vandergriff’s performance behind the wheel could play a crucial role in Reed’s championship aspirations. Success here may close the gap between Reed and the higher-ranked contenders Steve Torrence and Josh Hart, setting the stage for an intense Countdown to the Championship. Fans and the team alike will be watching closely to see if Vandergriff can maintain the momentum and keep the Top Fuel title chase alive for Shawn Reed Racing.
