Somkiat Chantra Honda WSBK Move: MotoGP Rider Shifts Gears in 2025

Honda has confirmed a strategic adjustment involving Somkiat Chantra, transferring the Thai rider from the LCR MotoGP squad to its factory team in the World Superbike Championship starting in 2025. This transition, part of Honda’s broader reshuffling, aims to strengthen its presence in the production-based racing category while aligning with Chantra’s evolving career trajectory.

Changes in Honda’s Rider Line-Up and Implications

Following the retirement of Takaaki Nakagami and Ai Ogura’s departure to Aprilia under Trackhouse Racing, Honda appointed Chantra for the second seat at its LCR satellite MotoGP team for 2025. However, the model that worked for Nakagami has not delivered similar results for Chantra, whose struggles with inexperience, adapting to MotoGP, and injury setbacks have limited his performance. Honda’s inability to leverage data effectively from Chantra’s participation posed a challenge beyond the loss of Idemitsu’s sponsorship, which finances Asian riders’ entries.

Meanwhile, the LCR team is preparing for the arrival of young Brazilian Diogo Moreira next season, marking a new chapter for the satellite outfit as it redefines its structure.

Building the New Honda WSBK Lineup with Experienced and New Riders

Honda’s move into World Superbike underscores its commitment to assembling a competitive roster by securing Jake Dixon, a current Moto2 race winner, who will exit the Moto2 category for the WSBK factory team. Joining Chantra, Dixon replaces riders Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge, who have left Honda for Ducati and rival teams, respectively. This revamped lineup reflects Honda’s efforts to stabilize and enhance its team in the production-based championship.

Chantra’s Performance History and Future Prospects

Somkiat Chantra, soon to be 27, has contested five seasons in Moto2, achieving two victories. His MotoGP experience includes nine races with a single points finish, notably at Assen, where he was advanced by wildcard Aleix Espargaro to secure a final points position. This shift to WSBK offers Chantra a fresh platform to rediscover his competitive edge and play a more pivotal role within Honda’s racing projects.

Looking Ahead: The Significance of Honda’s Strategic Shift

Honda’s decision to move Somkiat Chantra from MotoGP to World Superbike highlights the manufacturer’s focus on optimizing rider potential and data utility across racing formats. With a revamped WSBK team incorporating talent like Jake Dixon and Chantra, Honda aims to strengthen its foothold in the production-based championship while reassessing its MotoGP satellite team dynamics. These changes are poised to influence Honda’s performance and development heading into the 2025 season and beyond.
