Tony Stewart’s Bold NHRA Move Sets 2026 Racing Rivalry

Tony Stewart’s involvement in Top Fuel drag racing was initially intended as a short-term replacement for his wife, Leah Pruett. However, the three-time Cup Series champion quickly exceeded expectations by clinching the regular season championship, leaving his future in the NHRA in question as Pruett announced her return in 2026. Now, Stewart has confirmed his continuation in the sport with a groundbreaking announcement about his 2026 plans.

Despite stepping down from Pruett’s seat as originally planned, Stewart will remain a contender in Top Fuel behind the wheel of a new contender. Elite Motorsports disclosed that pending sponsorship, Stewart will drive its Top Fuel dragster in the 2026 Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series. This development follows Richard Freeman’s recent purchase of Josh Hart’s team and marks the extension of his partnership with Tony Stewart Racing (TSR).

Partnership Expansion Brings New Talent and Experience

Elite Motorsports is evolving into a family-centered operation, welcoming six-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders and promising driver Aaron Stanfield to its Top Fuel lineup. This strategic grouping adds depth to the team’s competitive edge in the upcoming season.

Richard Freeman highlighted the significance of adding Stewart as a driver alongside the other newcomers:

“Having Tony as our driver, adding another Top Fuel entry, we’re taking care of the sport and opening up possibilities,”

Freeman said.

“That’s why we’ll have Erica and Aaron get licensed in the car as well. First things first though, we need to get the program funded, but letting everyone know our intentions, that will help.”

Freeman expressed admiration for Stewart’s driving talent and stressed the unique value Stewart brings to the sport, both on and off the track. He also emphasized the excitement of Stewart and Pruett potentially competing against one another in the next season.

“Tony is a great driver; we all know he can drive anything. He’s great for drag racing, not just as a team owner, but behind the wheel,”

Freeman said.

“We’re excited that through our marketing alliance with Tony Stewart Racing, we’re creating an opportunity for Tony to keep a Top Fuel seat and a chance to race alongside his wife, Leah.”

Stewart Balances Ownership and Driving Roles

Stewart clarified his plans in statements released by Elite Motorsports, explaining the unique nature of his 2026 role. Although TSR cannot support a second Top Fuel car, the acquisition of Josh Hart’s team by Richard Freeman combined with their alliance allows Stewart to continue both as a team owner and a driver.

“TSR is not in a position to add a second Top Fuel car. But with Richard buying Josh Hart’s team and our recent alliance, I can still work as an owner and a driver to help both our organizations grow,”

Stewart said.

This arrangement ensures Stewart’s ongoing participation in Top Fuel without disrupting his wife’s return to her seat, maintaining a balance between personal and professional commitments in the sport.

Upcoming On-Track Rivalry Between Stewart and Pruett

One of the most intriguing aspects of this development is the prospect of Stewart and Pruett facing each other as direct competitors in NHRA’s Top Fuel division next season. Stewart has previously shared hesitations about racing against Leah but embraces the challenge as part of his competitive journey.

After a strong rookie season in 2024, Stewart has consistently improved his performance. In 2025, he secured his first Top Fuel victory and finished the regular season as the points leader. Currently just 18 points shy of the top spot with five races remaining, Stewart is in pursuit of his first Top Fuel World Title, underscoring his rapid adaptation and skill in drag racing.

Implications of Stewart’s NHRA Plans and Future Outlook

Stewart’s decision to continue racing in Top Fuel through Elite Motorsports reflects his commitment to the sport and his desire to maintain an active driving career alongside his ownership responsibilities. This move not only strengthens Elite’s team but also heightens anticipation for a thrilling 2026 NHRA Drag Racing Series season.

By actively competing while managing his team, Stewart positions himself as a multifaceted figure in drag racing, promoting growth and competitiveness in the sport. His upcoming rivalry with Pruett promises to capture fans’ attention and add an emotional dynamic to the races ahead.

As Stewart pushes forward, his bold NHRA future continues to unfold, setting the stage for memorable competition and further contributions to the drag racing community.
