Toprak Razgatlioglu, the Turkish motorcycle racing prodigy, is preparing to step into the MotoGP spotlight this season, eager to make his mark against established champions like Marc Marquez. Recently, at the Chigiana Musical Academy in Siena, Razgatlioglu and Jack Miller revealed the Yamaha M1 bike for the Pramac Racing Team, generating significant excitement among motorsport enthusiasts. With the first test scheduled at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, Toprak’s anticipation is palpable as he faces a new chapter in his racing career.
Adapting to MotoGP: A Steep Learning Curve Ahead
Razgatlioglu openly acknowledges the challenges of transitioning from Superbike to MotoGP, emphasizing the steep learning curve involved.
“We are close to heading to Malaysia,”
he shared, expressing his eagerness to start testing.
“This was my first presentation, and it felt amazing. There’s a lot of excitement, but I must remember that this is just my inaugural season. I have to learn, grow, and understand the nuances of MotoGP. The Superbike championship is a different story; this is an entirely new beast!”
Evaluating his experience from the recent Valencia test, Toprak explained,
“I had to adapt to the bike and grasp its intricacies without experimenting too much. In Malaysia, we will explore many more options, and if I find the right setup, I believe I can be more competitive. The first three races will be crucial for understanding the tires and the bike’s behavior.”
Comparisons and Expectations for the Season
When reflecting on his earlier exposure to the Yamaha M1 at Jerez, Razgatlioglu noted,
“I don’t remember it well; the bike was completely different, as was the setup. However, I felt immense potential with the V4, but we are still at the beginning.”
Regarding forecasts for his debut season, he admitted,
“Honestly, I wasn’t surprised. I had no expectations. Yamaha is working hard, and I’m focused on being as fast as possible.”
From Superbike Triumphs to a MotoGP Challenge
Toprak emphasized the vast differences between Superbike racing and MotoGP.
“It’s all different. When you jump from one Superbike to another, like from Yamaha to BMW, the difference isn’t as drastic. But transitioning from SBK to MotoGP is an entirely different story; everything changes and is incomparable.”
Despite his rapid ascent in the racing world, he remains grounded.
“I don’t like being called a superstar. The Toprak who won at Magny-Cours in 2019 is the same as today; the only difference is that I’ve won three titles. The most important thing is my character, and I intend to keep it, without changing. I want to show everyone who I am, hoping to achieve significant results. I’ve invested so much into this challenge, and I didn’t even stop during the winter break to train, convinced that by 2027 I can aim for something even greater.”
Respect and Rivalry: Marc Marquez in the Spotlight
Highlighting his connection with MotoGP legend Marc Marquez, Razgatlioglu expressed deep respect for the Spanish rider.
“We have a beautiful relationship. Marc is a legend and a simple person, without any superstar attitude. Last year, he showed the world what can be done after a serious injury, and it would be a dream to race against him. Unless he chooses to retire, I have immense respect for him.”
As the MotoGP community watches, many expect Toprak to bring fresh energy to the grid and challenge veterans like Marquez.
Team Support and Number Choice Reflecting New Ambitions
With strong backing from team principal Paolo Campinoti, who confidently predicted that Toprak would reach the podium before Danilo Petrucci achieves similar results with BMW, Razgatlioglu responded modestly, “I hope so; we’ll see.” He unveiled his decision to race with the number 07 instead of his familiar 54, a choice influenced by a conversation with Andrea Dovizioso.

“For me, this is a new chapter, one that I can write myself. If I do well, it would be something extraordinary. That’s why I chose a different number from 54. I spoke with Dovizioso about it—he raced with 04, and I asked if using 07, a unique number I like, was a good idea. He suggested I propose it to Dorna, and here I am. It was a brilliant idea I hadn’t thought of, but he saw the potential.”
Mentorship and Future Possibilities Beyond MotoGP
Razgatlioglu holds Andrea Dovizioso in high regard, not only for his riding prowess but also for his personal experience and mentorship.
“I admire him both as a rider and as a person. He might not smile often or show his emotions, but he has immense experience. It’s essential for me to listen to him and learn.”
Looking ahead, Toprak also teased a potential wildcard return to the Superbike World Championship.
“We’ll see… I have some ideas for the future. There are many MotoGP races, but who knows… maybe Magny-Cours? I have something in mind.”
Toprak Razgatlioglu’s Potential Impact on MotoGP
As the reigning Superbike champion prepares to take on MotoGP’s demanding circuits, his resolve and fresh perspective are likely to intensify competition in the series. With his strategic approach and respect for established riders like Marc Marquez, Razgatlioglu embodies both hope and intensity. This new chapter offers him a chance to shape his legacy and possibly become one of the defining figures in MotoGP racing.
