Toto Wolff Hints George Russell Contract Imminent After Delays

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed that a new contract for George Russell is very close to being finalized after weeks of speculation. Although Russell remains the most notable driver without a confirmed seat for the 2026 season, Wolff indicated that an agreement is expected imminently, alleviating growing uncertainty surrounding the British driver’s future. This update comes as the 27-year-old has showcased consistent strong performances throughout the 2025 Formula 1 campaign.

During the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, Wolff explained to Sky Sports, “We are super near,” when asked about the status of Russell’s contract. Pressed on whether the deal could be settled within days or hours, he responded, “Something like that.” The confirmation comes despite earlier rumors linking Mercedes with four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who recently affirmed he will remain at Red Bull through 2026.

George Russell on Contract Negotiations: Prioritizing Fair Terms

Russell himself addressed the contract situation while in Singapore, emphasizing the importance of proper terms over speed. He expressed caution about rushing the deal, explaining that drivers reach points in their careers where contracts must be carefully managed to ensure fairness. Russell said,

“I think for for any driver, when you get to a certain point in your career, things have be done right,”

“Every time you renew a contract it’s the most important one of of your life, and it has to be done with good care. There’s nothing to worry about. It will get done.”

“It’s just about something that’s fair, mutually beneficial. I think that’s what we all will chase. It’s obviously different for certain drivers who may have a bit more power, may have a bit less power. No more updates, nothing to report and I’ll be glad to tell you all once there is.”

His remarks highlight the delicate balance required in securing a contract that satisfies both parties amid high expectations and ongoing speculation in the paddock.

Kimi Antonelli’s Progress and Response to Criticism

Alongside Russell, 19-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli is expected to continue with Mercedes for the 2026 season despite a fluctuating debut year. Antonelli experienced notable difficulties during the European leg of the season, prompting Wolff’s vocal disappointment following an underwhelming performance at Monza. Nevertheless, Antonelli responded strongly in Azerbaijan, delivering a well-executed race that culminated in a fourth-place finish, signaling positive development.

Wolff commented on this turnaround, stating,

“I think since Baku, we’ve seen a lot of big focus. There was so much attention on him and expectations were so high,”

and added,

“I feel that he has just less work outside in terms of media duties and maybe sponsorship duties and he’s spending all of his time with his engineering team and that’s good.”

He went on to explain that Antonelli is still learning to adapt to Formula 1, highlighting the difficulty of adjusting to new circuits and the intense environment, saying,

“It’s his first year, he doesn’t know all these tracks, he doesn’t know all of this world, so for next year everyone starts with zero. And in that respect, I think he’s doing a good job.”

“It seems to have worked to get a little bit of fire under the arse.”

Evaluating Antonelli’s Potential as a Future Star

Despite ups and downs, Mercedes sees promise in Antonelli’s talent but recognizes the steep challenge of reaching the highest level. Wolff remarked on the bar set by elite drivers such as George Russell and Max Verstappen, noting the exceptional quality required to join their ranks. He commented,

“The junior track record is phenomenal, he’s the best probably that we’ve seen in 10 years. In go-karting, exceptional. But Formula 1 is a different ball game.”

Wolff underscored that success in junior categories does not guarantee immediate triumph in F1, emphasizing the ongoing nature of Antonelli’s development in the premier racing series.

Looking Ahead: What the Future Holds for Mercedes Drivers

The imminent finalization of the George Russell contract brings clarity to Mercedes’ driver lineup for 2026, ensuring stability in one of the sport’s most competitive teams. Meanwhile, Antonelli’s progress will be closely watched as he gains further experience to become a potential generational talent. Mercedes’ management approach suggests patience and support will remain key as both drivers continue adapting to evolving regulations and competition.

The official contract signing for Russell will likely conclude months of uncertainty, allowing the team and driver to focus fully on on-track performance. For Antonelli, the lessons learned throughout his rookie season could act as a springboard for a stronger campaign next year, as the young Italian continues to navigate the demands of Formula 1.
