The recently released Prime Video documentary, Earnhardt, has captivated NASCAR fans by showcasing rare footage and exclusive interviews that reveal the lesser-known sides of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Ty Dillon, one of the few current NASCAR drivers who had a personal connection with Earnhardt as a child, shared details about Ty Dillon’s relationship with Dale Earnhardt during a recent interview.
Dillon, who races full-time for Kaulig Racing, clarified that he has not yet watched the documentary. However, he spoke about how his connection to Earnhardt came from unique early childhood experiences. As the grandson of Richard Childress, the owner of the team for which Earnhardt drove the majority of his career, Dillon spent time around the racing legend at a young age. He recalled that Earnhardt often playfully pulled his leg and interacted with both him and his brother Austin at the racetrack.
He explained,
“I was very young at that time, but I just knew Dale [Earnhardt Sr.] from my perspective as a guy that when we were little and we were at the racetrack, he would come and bug my brother [Austin] and I, whether it was pinching us behind the neck or grabbing us as hard as he could to get our attention.”

Although Earnhardt’s attention sometimes frightened the young Dillon brothers, it came with rewards. Every time Dale Earnhardt won a race, the boys received a pizza and a celebration, forming special memories. Dillon remains thankful for those moments and continues to admire Earnhardt’s enduring legacy, especially because of how often people still speak fondly of the racing icon.
