Ty Gibbs is facing more than just a rough patch in the NASCAR Cup Series. The 22-year-old driver has not secured a top-10 finish since the beginning of the season and currently sits at 31st in the standings. The words of his late father, Coy Gibbs, echo through the halls of Joe Gibbs Racing during these challenging times.
Joe Gibbs, Ty’s grandfather and team owner, reflected after the Martinsville race, “We’re going to fight. Ty’s dad, Coy, always said, anytime we got in a tough spot, ‘I raised my kids tough.'” Despite finishing 13th, his best result of the year, Ty is still expected to perform at a higher level.
The Legacy of Coy Gibbs
Coy Gibbs’ faith in Ty is a crucial element in his racing journey. Remembering Coy inevitably brings back memories of the 2022 Xfinity Series season finale. That night, Ty won his seventh race of the year and his first NASCAR championship. Unfortunately, the joy was bittersweet as Coy passed away that night. The reasons for his death were not disclosed.
At just 20 years old, Ty not only persevered through the loss but also won the Cup Series Rookie of the Year Award in 2023. He maintained strong performances well into 2024, exemplifying the toughness Coy always believed his children possessed.
Joe Gibbs’ Leadership
Joe Gibbs, known for his discerning leadership, is scrutinizing the #54 team closely. He stated, “I know what I’m studying through all of that. It’s who surrounds us, who’s working hard at the race shop to help us rebound.” These individuals, Gibbs notes, are invaluable, especially during tough times. His focus remains on those who tirelessly support Ty and the team.
The hope is to guide Ty Gibbs out of his current struggles. If not, there might come a time when Joe Gibbs Racing needs to consider alternative drivers for the future performance of the team.
