Tyler Reddick’s chances of making the NASCAR playoffs are in doubt after a crash at Richmond Raceway and Austin Dillon’s victory on Saturday night. Despite leading a significant portion of the race, Reddick finished 34th, raising real concerns about his ability to qualify for the postseason as the final race at Daytona approaches.
Details of the Crash That Impacted Reddick’s Race
Reddick was running strongly during the race, but the turning point came on lap 182 when Daniel Suarez collided with Ty Gibbs. Suarez’s contact caused Gibbs to spin, and Gibbs’s car then struck Reddick, sending him into the SAFER barrier and ending his competitive run.
Reflecting on the incident, Reddick said,
“We can thank Daniel Suarez for that.”
He added,
“(Suarez) was frustrated. Whatever it was, (Gibbs) got in his way, was racing him and he moved him and it spun me out.”
The crash damaged Reddick’s car severely, turning it from one of the fastest on the track to one of the slowest.
Suarez’s Explanation of the Collision
Daniel Suarez, who finished seventh in the race, also commented on the crash, expressing regret over the incident. He said,
“I feel bad for (Reddick), I think it was,”
and explained,
“It really wasn’t intentional. The last thing I wanted (was) to crash him for no reason. (Gibbs) already had older tires and at that point it’s a two- or three-second difference.”
Suarez continued,
“When (Gibbs) went to the bottom, he just slowed down way more than what I anticipated. I bumped him a little bit to get some room but it was maybe too hard of a bump for the tires that he had and he got a wiggle and then he ended up spinning out (Reddick), which wasn’t intentional. I feel bad for that. Bad situation there. Just trying to make as much time as possible.”
Austin Dillon Secures Playoff Spot with Richmond Win
Austin Dillon’s victory at Richmond guaranteed him a postseason berth, making him the 14th driver to clinch a playoff spot this season through a win. The competition for the final two playoff positions will be decided next weekend at Daytona.
Heading into the final race, Reddick holds a 29-point advantage over Alex Bowman, who currently occupies the cutoff spot. However, the scenario remains tense; if a new winner emerges at Daytona and Bowman outperforms Reddick by at least 29 points, Reddick could fail to qualify for the playoffs despite his regular-season title win last year.

Next Steps and Playoff Implications
With the Richmond race’s unexpected outcome, Tyler Reddick’s path to the playoffs is now precarious. The upcoming race at Daytona will be critical in determining whether Reddick extends his postseason run or faces elimination. The pressure mounts as every point and position will factor heavily into the final playoff roster.
