Valentino Rossi, a MotoGP legend, recently identified the main rivals he faced during his racing career but notably did not include Marc Marquez among them. The announcement occurred at an event in Indonesia where Rossi’s VR46 team revealed a special livery ahead of the upcoming race at Mandalika, highlighting Rossi MotoGP rivals in his history.
Marc Marquez, who last weekend matched Rossi’s record of seven MotoGP world titles and nine overall championships at the Japanese Grand Prix, has been frequently compared to Rossi in their sporting achievements. Despite their intense on-track confrontations, their personal relationship suffered a major breakdown during the 2015 season, after Rossi accused Marquez of sabotaging his title chances.
Rossi’s Most Notable Competitors During His Career
Throughout his illustrious career, Rossi faced several significant adversaries, yet Marquez was not among those he named publicly. Instead, Rossi highlighted his main rivals as Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo, Max Biaggi, and Dani Pedrosa, all of whom played key roles in his racing battles.
I had a lot of great rivals in my career and I think it’s between [Casey] Stoner and [Jorge] Lorenzo and [Max] Biaggi and [Dani] Pedrosa,
Rossi stated.
Maybe Lorenzo because we were in the same team and we were team-mates for a long time. So, it was not just a rivalry – it was like a love story.

Rossi’s intense competition with Lorenzo was heightened by their time as teammates, creating a complex relationship that went beyond typical rivalry. This “love story” metaphor underlined the emotional depth and intertwined careers they shared during many seasons on the same team.
Former Adversaries Building Respect Off the Track
Rossi’s relationship with some of his rivals, especially Casey Stoner, has improved considerably in recent years. The Australian rider has frequently visited Rossi’s VR46 Ranch and has taken an active role in mentoring upcoming talents within the Rossi Academy, including Pecco Bagnaia.
Stoner’s presence at various events, like the Misano weekend, and his support toward Rossi’s proteges demonstrate a shift from fierce competition to mutual respect and collaboration within the MotoGP community.
Marquez’s Record and Rossi’s Current Career Path
After securing his seventh world title, Marquez expressed pride in joining an exclusive group of riders alongside Rossi and Giacomo Agostini, who share this historic achievement. Earlier in the year, Marquez had also mentioned Rossi as one of the riders he would like to race against during his career.
Since retiring from MotoGP at the end of 2021, Rossi has transitioned to car racing, competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s LMGT3 category. Currently driving a BMW managed by WRT, Rossi finished fourth in the recent Fuji 6 Hours round, continuing to demonstrate his competitive spirit beyond two-wheel racing.
The exclusion of Marquez from Rossi’s list of key rivals, despite their well-documented battles and Marquez’s recent record-equalling success, adds a complex layer to their rivalry’s legacy. Rossi’s focus on other competitors signals nuanced personal perspectives on rivalry shaped by both on-track competition and off-track relationships.
