Will Power’s Contract Uncertainty Grows as Team Penske Talks Stall

Will Power, the accomplished Australian driver for Team Penske, faces growing uncertainty regarding his contract, which expires at the end of the 2025 IndyCar season. As the series approaches its penultimate race at Milwaukee Mile, Power has yet to receive a contract extension offer from Team Penske, fueling frustration amid stalled negotiations.

Currently sixth in the IndyCar standings, Power has been the strongest performer for Team Penske this season, highlighted by his victory at the Grand Prix of Portland—the first win for a Penske driver this year. Despite his success on track, contract talks have dragged on without resolution, prompting concerns about his immediate future with the team.

Power’s contract situation has been an ongoing topic since the beginning of the 2025 season. This year, he engaged Fernando Alonso’s management firm, A14 Management, to oversee discussions, with Oriol Servia acting as his representative. Earlier in the year, Team Penske owner Roger Penske acknowledged that discussions were underway but also indicated the team was weighing its options.

As the season neared its conclusion, Power voiced his frustration over the prolonged uncertainty. When asked about progress in talks during the Milwaukee Mile event, the 43-year-old shared,

“I mean at the end of the day, what is it, a week left, basically close to a week. Roger called me after Portland. He said ‘Let’s talk it out after Sunday and you know see where everything stands’. I keep getting asked the same question. Nothing has changed. He told me that after Detroit.” —Will Power, Team Penske driver

Industry insiders anticipate an update on Power’s contract status during the final race weekend in Nashville or shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, rumors have surfaced linking David Malukas as a potential candidate to replace Power at Team Penske.

Family Insight Reveals Interest from Other IndyCar Teams Amid Contract Uncertainty

Adding context to the situation, Will Power’s wife, Liz Power, opened up about the emotional toll the uncertain contract talks have had on her husband since his recent win in Portland. She described the mix of disappointment and resilience Power has experienced throughout the drawn-out negotiations. Liz noted,

“After May, seeing Will going through this rollercoaster of the emotions, it’s been more melancholy. Not mad; just disappointed because, as he’s said, ‘I’ve been loyal,’ and we haven’t gotten a lot of answers, and it’s been hard to watch him go through that. But on the flipside, it’s been a fun experience for us.” —Liz Power, spouse of Will Power

She further revealed that several other teams are expressing strong interest in Power’s talents, recognizing his value despite the uncertainty with Team Penske. Liz said,

“Well, just because you see there’s interest in Will. There’s a lot of interest in Will. (Other teams outside Penske) see his worth. I think he’s handling this, in whatever which way it goes, so we’ll see what happens at the last race.” —Liz Power

Should Team Penske decide to move forward with David Malukas, it opens the door for Power to potentially join AJ Foyt Racing. Such a move could trigger a lively driver market within IndyCar, reminiscent of recent high-profile transfers in Formula 1, like Lewis Hamilton’s transfer to Ferrari.
