William Byron slams Atlanta wreck chaos: “We look like Truck Series” after multi-car crash frustration

William Byron openly criticized the chaos during the multi-car crash at Atlanta’s Quaker State 400, describing the situation as a frustrating experience that “just sucks.” The Hendrick Motorsports driver compared the incident to racing in the Truck Series, emphasizing his disappointment with the mid-race turmoil.

Since the 2021 repaving of EchoPark Speedway, formerly Atlanta Motor Speedway, the track has encouraged superspeedway-style pack racing, leading to tight, intense battles. On lap 69, a restart triggered by Denny Hamlin set off a massive wreck involving several top contenders, including Byron and many of his teammates.

Details of the crash that shook the Quaker State 400

Starting in 18th place, Byron quickly advanced into the top five during Stage 1. Many drivers, including Hamlin, opted for aggressive strategies in pursuit of better track position on the restart. However, the field bunched tightly, causing Hamlin to make contact with John Hunter Nemechek, which then led to a spin involving Noah Gragson.

This chain reaction took out numerous racers such as Ryan Blaney, Austin Cindric, and Byron himself. Reflecting on the incident, Byron expressed his confusion and frustration, saying,

“It just sucks right like you’re really not that worried about getting back to the front because it’s a hundred lap stage and then we crash on the restart….you can be aggressive, like once you get kind of fully up to speed. I mean, obviously there’s jockeying on restarts always, but just try not to crash, you know. So I don’t know why we crashed the whole field like trying to get up speed. We look like a truck series or something.” (0:06 onwards) —William Byron, NASCAR driver

This crash marked Byron’s first DNF of the season after an 18-race streak. As a result, the championship leader saw his advantage shrink against Chase Elliott, who won the race and now trails Byron by 37 points in the standings.

Byron’s social media reaction captures his anger post-crash

Following the wreck, Byron vented his frustration on X by sharing a GIF depicting a weatherman being overwhelmed by a snowplow, symbolizing the chaos he experienced during the race. Accompanying the clip, he posted a string of angry emojis, illustrating his displeasure with the race’s outcome.

In a detailed interview, Byron recounted how he became entangled in the 18-car wreck on the track:

“We were just running a great race in the top five. They all stacked up and at that point, I went right a little bit; the wreck was already happening and I just kind of got shoved into it.” —William Byron, NASCAR driver

Current challenges and upcoming competition for Byron

Aside from the setback at Atlanta, the 27-year-old Byron is also competing in the In-Season Challenge, where he recently lost to Ryan Preece in the first round. Preece, representing Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, finished 15th overall in that contest. Byron now prepares to face Noah Gragson in the second round, scheduled to take place on the Chicago Street Course.

The latest events at Atlanta and within the Challenge highlight the difficulties Byron faces as he works to maintain his championship lead amidst fierce competition and unexpected incidents on the track.
