Yuki Tsunoda Faces Disappointment: Qualifies P15 Despite Strong Performance in Japan GP Practice Sessions

Yuki Tsunoda, the Red Bull Racing driver, experienced disappointment as he qualified in P15 for the Japanese Grand Prix, despite strong performances throughout the practice sessions. The weekend showed Tsunoda consistently close in time to his teammate, Max Verstappen, a notable achievement considering the considerable gap between Verstappen and other drivers like Lawson. However, the race at his home circuit didn’t come together, leaving Tsunoda with the task of climbing the grid to secure points in the Red Bull car.

Tsunoda expressed his views post-qualifying, saying, “I mean Q1 felt pretty good, I just missed the window, I guess.” He emphasized the car’s narrow operational window, stating, “The window that this car can operate is very narrow, and the warm up, probably most of the things have to be almost perfect.” Tsunoda struggled to replicate the warm-up needed during Q2, attributing his subpar performance to this factor. “I kind of recognised in Q2, but it was a bit too late, and it’s a shame that I wasn’t able to put it all together when it matters,” he admitted.

A fire during Q2, resulting in a red flag, disrupted the session and hindered the drivers’ plans. Although he acknowledged it affected everyone, Tsunoda believed his main issue lay in the warm-up process. Reflecting on his performance, Tsunoda stated, “I had quite a big gust in turn 2, but [the] quite big moments I had are a bit unexpected.” His optimism remained as he noted the promising pace in Q1 and continued, “I’m sure it’s still learning in the process I’m learning, but yeah, very ashamed, I didn’t expect, to be honest, this result today.”

Despite the setback, Tsunoda looks forward to adapting to the car as the race proceeds, mentioning the limited long runs he’s had. “I was expecting a bit more today, so that definitely makes a bit of disappointment now,” he remarked. Highlighting his learning curve, “I know I can excel much more consistently, which is important, so it will be an interesting race tomorrow, I mean if it’s rain or whatever.”

The potential for rain at Suzuka presents both challenges and opportunities for Tsunoda. A shift in conditions could allow him to move forward in the race, and he expressed determination to make the most of the situation. “I’ll do my best,” he concluded, mirroring the spirit that has characterized his career so far.

Tsunoda’s performance gap with Verstappen was remarkably close in Q1 at 0.024 seconds, whereas it extended to 0.498 seconds in Q2, failing to improve upon his Q1 time. The focus is now on how weather conditions might impact the race and whether they will grant Tsunoda a chance to gain positions.

As the race approaches, fans are eager to see how Yuki Tsunoda will fare amid these challenges. With determination and a touch of favorable weather, the young driver’s prospects could pivot, underscoring the unpredictable nature of Formula 1.
