Zane Smith Nearly Pins Kyle Larson Against Wall in Tense Block at Nashville Speedway

<pKyle Larson, the 2021 Cup Series champion, came into the Nashville Speedway aiming to recover from a disappointing Memorial Day weekend, during which his much-anticipated Double ended in frustration. However, as the Cup Series event unfolded on the 1.3-mile Tennessee track, Larson’s struggles continued to overshadow his efforts.

After a difficult qualifying session left Larson starting from 28th position—his poorest qualifying spot in 2025—he worked to improve his standing on race day. Despite securing a place in the playoffs with three wins earlier in the season, Larson showed signs of frustration and difficulty throughout the night. His Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was noticeably unsettled during close competition, especially when trapped in tight three-wide racing situations.

Tight Three-Wide Battle with Smith and Gibbs Creates Strain

Larson found himself in the middle of a fierce three-wide battle involving Zane Smith and Ty Gibbs, which rattled his No. 5 Chevy. Midway through the 300-lap race, Larson attempted an inside pass on Smith’s No. 54 car. However, Smith responded by moving up the track, nearly pinning Larson against the outside wall, forcing Larson to back off to avoid contact.

Despite this intense moment, Larson managed to finish the race in eighth position, trailing Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron who placed fifth. This outcome reflected Larson’s ongoing fight against tough race conditions and the competitive field at Nashville.

Larson Reflects on a Difficult Night and Continued Struggles

Before qualifying, Larson openly admitted his lack of confidence regarding the optimal driving lines. He said,

“I just didn’t really have the confidence [on] where to drive into and what angle and all that. Unfortunately, didn’t qualify where we wanted to. I know our car is much better than 28th.”

After the race, Larson described the day as a long and challenging one, marked by close calls and unpredictable circumstances. He commented,

“It was a long tough race for sure, didn’t just get off to the start we wanted really yesterday and it carried over today. But, we had a lot of craziness happen, missed a few wrecks, almost wrecked myself a few different times then I just had good restarts.”

Nashville has historically been a difficult track for Larson and his team, but he acknowledged their efforts and left satisfied with the eventual top-10 finish. This result offers some optimism, suggesting a foundation on which Larson and Hendrick Motorsports can build as the season continues.

Race Outcome Highlights NASCAR Competition at Nashville Speedway

This race at Nashville Speedway underscored the unpredictable nature of the Cup Series, with aggressive blocking maneuvers like Zane Smith’s defensive move affecting driver positioning and race dynamics. Larson’s encounter with Smith during this tense defensive effort, which involved blocking and close-quarter racing near the wall, demonstrated just how fierce competition remains as drivers battle for playoff positioning.

As the season advances, Larson’s performance at Nashville will be analyzed closely, especially as he seeks to regain strong momentum. His ability to overcome challenging tracks and incidents will be crucial for maintaining his playoff contention.
