2026 Formula 1 Car Rules Refined After Key Commission Talks

On March 18, the first Formula 1 Commission meeting of 2026 was held in Bahrain, chaired by FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis and FOM President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. The meeting focused on refining the 2026 Formula 1 car regulations following initial pre-season testing and feedback from teams and drivers.

These regulatory updates will now be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for final confirmation ahead of the new season.

Insights from Pre-Season Testing and Technical Discussions

The meeting addressed early observations collected during pre-season testing, with input from teams, power unit manufacturers, FIA, and Formula One Management. A shared commitment was made to resolve outstanding technical issues before the first race in Melbourne next month.

Feedback from drivers, gathered through an FIA survey, was reviewed in detail. Key topics included the cars’ overall design, energy management and power unit performance, aerodynamics, overtaking potential, tyre behavior, and mechanical grip.

Drivers responded positively to the reduced weight and smaller size of the 2026 cars, noting improvements in ride quality and initial acceleration.

Planned Evaluations and Metrics Before Opening Race

Further in-depth testing of energy management systems is scheduled during the upcoming Bahrain pre-season test. Despite the current findings, the commission agreed that no major regulatory changes should be made immediately, as more detailed data is needed to avoid causing instability prior to the season opener.

Adjustments to Race Start Procedures and Sprint Event Considerations

Constructive discussions also took place regarding race start procedures. As a result, enhanced evaluations of race control systems and on-car management technologies will continue during the Bahrain testing period to improve race starts.

The commission explored increasing the number of Sprint events to a maximum of 12, reflecting sustained interest from fans and event promoters in such formats.

Future Steps and the Road Ahead for 2026 Regulations

The refinements to the 2026 Formula 1 regulations underscore the collaborative effort among FIA, FOM, teams, and drivers to balance performance, safety, and competitive racing. Stefano Domenicali and Nikolas Tombazis emphasized ongoing cooperation to fine-tune car specifications as further data is gathered.

These developments will shape the early stages of the 2026 season, with careful monitoring to ensure stability and fairness while keeping the excitement of Formula 1 racing intact.
