In recent seasons, Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch have dominated conversations as the top contenders whenever NASCAR approaches a road course event. Their performances have been heavily analyzed and hailed, creating a fresh benchmark for competitors. However, before this spotlight turned to these emerging names, AJ Allmendinger held the reputation of being the driver to watch on road courses.
Allmendinger’s Track Record on Road Courses
AJ Allmendinger has forged his Cup Series career largely through success on road circuits. Every one of his three career Cup Series victories has come on road courses, with many of his Xfinity Series wins following a similar pattern. Notably, Allmendinger claimed a road course win as recently as 2023, triumphing at Circuit of The Americas in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and later securing victory at the Charlotte Roval race in the Cup Series. Despite this history, his performance on road courses since those wins has been less competitive.
Allmendinger Responds to Current Road Course Dynamics
As NASCAR prepares to return to Circuit of The Americas, Allmendinger was asked how the present focus on van Gisbergen and Zilisch affects him personally, given they are viewed as the drivers to beat while others come from behind. He said,
I mean, the way we change that narrative is you go beat them, right? But for the most part, we didn’t do that at most of the road courses last year,
reflecting a grounded perspective without assigning blame to external opinions.

He went on to say that the bigger source of frustration stemmed from his own and his team’s struggles last season.
It’s not frustrating to me. I think, for me, the most frustrating thing was just, in general, we didn’t run great at the road courses last year. I put a lot of that on my shoulders.
Challenges with Tire Performance and Race Strategy
Allmendinger pointed to technical factors as contributors to his difficulty maintaining strong runs. Specifically, he noted the impact of Goodyear’s tire changes.
I think as Goodyear softens the tire, it gives the advantage to a guy like SVG that really knows how to save the tires. It’s something that, whether it was setup-based or my own doing, I struggled with it last year of trying to be good on long runs,
he explained, highlighting the nuanced relationship between equipment and driver skill on road courses.
Perspective on Rivalry and Self-Evaluation
Instead of viewing van Gisbergen’s recent dominance with resentment or frustration, Allmendinger offered a more reflective take. He said that if he had been frequently finishing just behind van Gisbergen but unable to surpass him, it would have been a more aggravating form of rivalry. However, because his finishes were generally further back, he did not frame the issue as a personal block by van Gisbergen, but as an indication that he needed to improve his own race craft.
He emphasized the importance of learning from top competitors rather than seeing them as obstacles. By studying the strategies and skills of van Gisbergen and Zilisch, Allmendinger intends to refine his approach. This analytical acceptance, he suggests, is the mindset of a racer serious about elevating performance.
Qualifying Results and Upcoming Prospects at COTA
At the recent qualifying session at Circuit of The Americas, Allmendinger secured a strong starting position by qualifying seventh. Meanwhile, Shane van Gisbergen posted the 13th-fastest time, demonstrating how results can vary. This sets the stage for a potentially competitive race where Allmendinger’s focus and adjustments could pay off.
What This Means for the Road Course Season Ahead
The shift in road course spotlight from AJ Allmendinger to newer contenders like van Gisbergen and Zilisch signals a changing era in NASCAR’s specialized racing segments. Allmendinger’s measured response and willingness to analyze his own performance rather than external factors could help him regain competitiveness. As road course events continue to grow in significance, drivers who adapt best to evolving conditions and equipment like the Goodyear tires are likely to shape the championship narrative.
