AJ Allmendinger Taken to Care Center After COTA Race Heat

AJ Allmendinger, driving for Kaulig Racing, was transported to the care center after the DuraMax Texas Grand Prix Powered by RelaDyne on March 1, 2026, at Circuit of the Americas (COTA). Despite finishing ninth in the NASCAR Cup Series road course event, Allmendinger required medical attention due to heat-related problems caused by a malfunctioning cool suit during the race.

Allmendinger qualified seventh and completed the 95-lap competition in the top ten, but the extreme heat inside his #16 Chevy created challenges. He was one of several drivers impacted by similar overheating conditions on the demanding track that day.

PRN confirmed on X,

“AJ Allmendinger was taken to the care center for treatment, @WendyVenturini reports. AJ’s cool suit failed during the race and he was dealing with a very hot car.”

Drivers Face Heat-Related Challenges at COTA Event

Alongside Allmendinger’s struggle, Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman abandoned his #48 Chevrolet with 25 laps remaining. In Bowman’s place, Myatt Snider completed the race. Other competitors, such as Team Penske’s Joey Logano and 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick, also encountered difficulties managing the heat inside their cars, highlighting how taxing the conditions were on March 1.

AJ Allmendinger’s Reflections on Early Stock Car Racing Trials

AJ Allmendinger has been competing in the NASCAR Cup Series for nearly twenty years. In a 2025 interview with Motorsports.com, he candidly discussed the challenges he faced early in his career. The 44-year-old driver debuted in 2006 with Team Red Bull, driving the #84 Dodge before switching to Toyota the following year.

During his rookie season, Allmendinger struggled to qualify, facing tough competition as the series featured between 50 to 56 cars attempting to make each race. As he recalled:

“was almost trying to learn how to walk again. And I kind of got shoved right into it with Red Bull. I would never change it, but I didn’t have any experience in stock car racing. And they went right to the Cup. We probably were trying to do it in, I wouldn’t say the most competitive era, but it definitely had the most cars right there. In my first two years, we had 50 to 56 cars trying to qualify for the race every week, so that was difficult.”

AJ Allmendinger has since achieved three Cup Series wins, 87 top-ten finishes, and five pole positions across 483 starts. His latest victory was at the 2023 Bank of America Roval 400 at Charlotte Roval, cementing his long-standing presence in the sport.

The Broader Impact of Heat on NASCAR Road Course Racing

Heat management has become a critical factor in races at venues like Circuit of the Americas. The failure of cooling equipment, such as Allmendinger’s cool suit, not only threatens driver safety but also influences race outcomes. Incidents this season highlight the ongoing struggle teams face in protecting drivers from extreme cockpit temperatures while maintaining competitive performance.

How teams adapt cooling technology and prepare for these conditions will be closely watched in upcoming NASCAR events, especially as the series continues to include challenging road courses on the calendar.
