Alex Bowman’s place in the NASCAR Playoffs was uncertain until the very last moments of the regular-season finale Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. Two drivers without wins this season, Cole Custer and Justin Haley, battled for first on the final lap, with a victory by either sending Bowman out of the postseason. However, Ryan Blaney, who had already won earlier this year, crossed the finish line first, allowing Bowman to retain his playoff position.
Intense Final Laps Keep Bowman on Edge
Bowman described the closing moments of the race as deeply stressful, with numerous lead changes and high stakes. Throughout the final laps, Bowman’s Hendrick Motorsports teammates initially led before being pushed back in the pack, while Blaney moved into contention for the win. This constant shuffle created a rollercoaster of emotions for Bowman as he watched from the sidelines.
It was a very uncomfortable situation,
Bowman reflected.
Your anxiety and stress are spiked through the roof at that point. Past that, it kind of was what it was, like it was so out of your control.
—Alex Bowman
With all that going on, it was such a range of emotions that made it a lot more so than if it had been just one non-winner leading the whole time. That made it kind of up and down. Yeah, it was a weird thing to have to sit through.

Looking Ahead: Bowman Aims for Consistency in Playoffs
Now officially the 16th seed entering the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, Bowman starts five points below the elimination threshold for the Round of 12. Despite this precarious position, the points spread among the bottom 10 playoff drivers is only 12, leaving room for recovery.
If we can just put together solid weeks through this first round, we should be OK,
Bowman said.
The lack of Playoff points is tough, but we’ll continue to work hard at it.
—Alex Bowman
Bowman’s survival through a dramatic final race underscores the unpredictability of the NASCAR season and places him in a challenging but hopeful spot to make a deep run in the playoffs. His performance in the coming weeks will be crucial as he seeks to advance beyond the early rounds and secure a breakthrough in his NASCAR Playoff battle.
