Alex Bowman’s NASCAR Struggles Deepen with New Health Setback

After crashing out of the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway and finishing 23rd at EchoPark Speedway during the second race of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series, Alex Bowman arrived at Circuit of the Americas with hopes of improving his results. Bowman, a driver for Hendrick Motorsports, had shown impressive consistency at the Austin, Texas track, holding five top-10 finishes in as many starts on COTA’s varying course configurations.

During the race at Circuit of the Americas, Bowman was forced to exit prematurely for health reasons, with Myatt Snider stepping in to drive his No. 48 Chevrolet during the last stage. Snider finished the race in 36th place, five laps behind the leader. Bowman was treated at the infield medical center and released, but subsequent health concerns resulted in him being sidelined from the upcoming Straight Talk Wireless 500 at Phoenix Raceway. Anthony Alfredo has been named to replace him for that event.

How Health Issues are Affecting Bowman’s Season and Standings

Bowman is currently ranked last in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings, positioned 36th and trailing the playoff qualification cutoff by 45 points. Considering his diagnosis of vertigo, his prospects have worsened, especially since he missed races for medical reasons in the two previous seasons. While Bowman is expected to receive a playoff waiver, that provision comes into play only if he climbs into the top 16 of the regular-season standings—a challenging task with his current deficit.

The situation grows more complicated as there is uncertainty around whether Bowman will be cleared to compete in the next race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a track where he secured a victory four years ago. His ongoing health issues put additional strain on a season that has already been difficult.

Team Dynamics and Contract Considerations at Hendrick Motorsports

Now in his ninth season with Hendrick Motorsports, Bowman remains the only driver on the team without a contract extending beyond 2026. His teammate Kyle Larson recently secured a contract extension, and primary sponsor Ally Financial is committed to sponsoring the No. 48 team through 2028. These contractual factors increase the pressure on Bowman to get back on track, but his health challenges have complicated his ability to deliver consistent performances.

Upcoming Races and Broadcast Information

The next race, the Straight Talk Wireless 500 at Phoenix Raceway, will be held on Sunday, March 8, with live coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1. With Bowman sidelined due to vertigo, Anthony Alfredo is set to compete in his place as the team seeks to maintain competitive pace in Bowman’s absence.
