Just two days after settling a high-profile legal battle with McLaren Racing, Alex Palou delivered a commanding performance to win the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The reigning IndyCar champion dominated much of the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series opener, showcasing his skill and focus despite recent off-track distractions.
Palou Ends Legal Dispute Before Racing to a Decisive Victory
The recent resolution between Palou and McLaren came after a British court awarded McLaren $12 million in damages for breach of contract. The dispute stemmed from Palou’s decision in 2023 to remain with Chip Ganassi Racing despite earlier commitments to McLaren for the 2024 season. Following the court ruling, both parties agreed to settle the matter out of court just days before the season began.
On the streets of St. Petersburg, Palou quickly refocused on racing. Although he started fourth on the grid, Palou methodically advanced during the initial laps of the 100-lap race held on the temporary street circuit. He took the lead near the one-third mark and then steadily expanded his advantage.
By the time the checkered flag dropped, Palou had established a commanding margin of more than 31 seconds over Scott McLaughlin, who started on pole but finished second. Christian Lundgaard claimed the third spot on the podium, while Kyle Kirkwood finished fourth and Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five.

After the race, Palou credited his team and equipment for the win, emphasizing their collective efforts:
“Amazing. I can really tell you it’s been an amazing off-season. Everybody at CGR and Honda have done a tremendous job and the car was unbelievable today. I feel like those Firestones (tires) were everlasting, like they would just keep going. I had that amazing car today, lot of power, so yeah I cannot thank these guys enough,” he said.
Palou Reflects on the Legal Challenges and What Lies Ahead
While his victory underscores Palou’s status as a top contender, the off-season contract dispute remained a prominent backdrop leading into the race weekend. The Spaniard’s initial agreement to join McLaren in 2024 was upended by his decision to stay with Chip Ganassi Racing amid rumored Formula 1 opportunities, prompting legal action from McLaren.
Palou described the prolonged legal fight as one of the toughest periods in his career, expressing relief that it is now behind him:
“I don’t recommend that to anybody,” Palou told Fox Sports. “It’s not a very exciting experience for your life. But I learned a lot. I’m glad it’s now over, that it’s in the past. Honestly, I’ve gone through a lot in the last two-and-a-half or three seasons, and getting started now in 2026 feels really good.”
With four titles in the past five years, Palou’s return to form places him firmly in the championship conversation as the series looks ahead to the upcoming Good Ranchers 250 in Phoenix. His ability to overcome both on- and off-track obstacles highlights his standing as the benchmark driver within the IndyCar field.
The dominant showing at St. Petersburg not only reinforces Palou’s commitment to Chip Ganassi Racing but also signals the intense competition expected throughout the 2026 season as fans and teams watch for his next moves.
