Alex Bowman, a NASCAR Cup Series driver for Hendrick Motorsports, will not compete in Sunday’s Straight Talk Wireless 500 at Phoenix Raceway due to a vertigo diagnosis received this week. Anthony Alfredo will fill in as the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet, ensuring the team maintains its presence on the track while Bowman’s health remains the priority. This change follows an incident last Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas where Bowman experienced vertigo symptoms, forcing him to exit the race with about 20 laps left.
After the event, Bowman underwent a thorough two-day medical evaluation which confirmed the vertigo condition. Despite efforts to return to driving, including laps in a streetcar on a road course in Concord, NC, the team ultimately elected to protect Bowman’s long-term well-being by sidelining him until fully cleared by medical professionals.
Anthony Alfredo Takes Over Driving Duties for No. 48 Chevrolet
Anthony Alfredo, a 26-year-old driver competing full-time in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series with Viking Motorsports, has been named as Bowman’s replacement for the upcoming race. Alfredo is no stranger to Hendrick Motorsports, having contributed as a simulator driver for both the team and Chevrolet across several seasons. This familiarity is expected to ease his transition into the role.
Alfredo addressed the circumstances surrounding his assignment with serious consideration.
“First and foremost, I hate it for Alex. No race car driver wants to be in the position where they have to give up their seat for a weekend to someone else,”
he said.
“His health is definitely the most important thing, and I hope he gets back to the track soon. I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Blake (Harris, crew chief) and the No. 48 team for this race. It’s a group I’m already familiar with due to my relationship with Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet. The goal is to have a solid weekend at Phoenix (Raceway) and help get the team some good notes for future races.”
Uncertain Return Timeline and Playoff Considerations
There is no confirmed return date for Alex Bowman, as Hendrick Motorsports has stated they will not advance his comeback until he receives complete medical clearance. The team is pursuing a medical waiver to maintain Bowman’s eligibility in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, a critical factor for his ability to compete when healthy again.
Bowman’s absence and Alfredo’s involvement underscore the challenges teams face when unexpected health issues arise during the competitive season. This situation highlights the team’s dedication to driver safety and the complexities involved in balancing medical needs with race schedule demands.
