Austin Hill Eyes Daytona Comeback After Season Opener Setback

Austin Hill arrives at Daytona International Speedway determined to bounce back from a disappointing end to his winning streak in the season-opening race. After claiming three consecutive victories from 2022 to 2024, Hill’s streak was halted by a rear end gear failure in last year’s opener. He now seeks his 11th career drafting track victory in the upcoming United Auto Rentals 300 at the 2.5-mile superspeedway on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.

Hill’s Confidence Rooted in Thriving Under Pressure at Superspeedways

Known as a top competitor on superspeedways in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Hill thrives in the intense, close-quarters racing that Daytona demands. In reflecting on his approach, Hill said,

“I actually have a lot of fun with it.”

Starting his fifth full-time season driving the No. 21 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, he explained,

“Everyone talks about pressure and questions if the pressure is going to get to you. But for me, I just go into Daytona weekends with the same mindset that I always do.”

He added,

“We try to run up front, do our thing, stay out of wrecks, and hope that it’s enough at the end.”

RCR’s Strong Presence Continues Despite Previous Setbacks

While Hill missed the win at last year’s Daytona opener, his Richard Childress Racing teammate Jesse Love secured victory and went on to clinch the series championship at Phoenix Raceway. That season was also marked by the dominance of rookie sensation Connor Zilisch, who won 10 out of 32 races before moving up to the NASCAR Cup Series with Trackhouse Racing, a move welcomed by Love and other contenders.

Jesse Love Focused on Building Momentum for Repeat Success

Love expressed his determination to repeat the Daytona victory, saying,

“Obviously there is a lot of want and desire to go back-to-back at Daytona, a lot of want and desire to start the year off with a win and get RCR’s fifth win in a row.”

Reflecting on his mindset, he continued,

“Definitely looking forward to it. I’m kind of tired of the offseason. I’m just ready to get back in my swing of things.”

He also noted a new calmness compared to previous years:

“I’m excited, not nervous or anything like that, which is different from past years where I typically feel like I am a little bit nervous to start the season. But now I have my feet under me, I know what to expect and what not to expect, and mostly I am a little bit wiser now to understand similar things that can happen that I don’t normally think of.”

Shifts in the Field Open Opportunities for Veteran Drivers

The departure of Zilisch to the Cup Series may benefit veterans like Justin Allgaier, the 2024 series champion with JR Motorsports, who is set to compete both in the Daytona 500 and the O’Reilly Auto Parts race. On Wednesday, Allgaier secured his spot in the Daytona 500 driving the No. 40 JRM Chevrolet, successfully joining the field from the group of eight Open cars vying for entry.

Significance for Upcoming NASCAR Season and Daytona’s Role

The United Auto Rentals 300 at Daytona presents a critical opportunity for Austin Hill to regain his winning form and extend Richard Childress Racing’s dominance at superspeedway events. With strong competition from teammates and seasoned drivers like Love and Allgaier, the race will set an early tone for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season. How Hill performs after his mechanical setback could influence his momentum and the championship outlook moving forward.
