Bagnaia’s Ducati Exit Nears: Lorenzo Reveals Smart Backup Plan

Francesco Bagnaia appears to be on the verge of losing his seat with Ducati for the 2027 MotoGP season as Pedro Acosta is rumored to have signed with the reigning world champions. Although Ducati has not officially confirmed Acosta’s arrival, this development suggests Bagnaia will need to explore new options despite securing two world titles while riding for the Italian manufacturer.

MotoGP legend Jorge Lorenzo commented on the situation in an interview with Motosprint, highlighting the harsh realities within the sport that have led to this potential shift.

Performance Factors Behind Ducati’s Potential Lineup Shift

Bagnaia narrowly missed achieving a third consecutive world championship in 2024, finishing just ten points shy. However, his strong 2024 season contrasts with the previous year when his teammate, Marc Marquez, outperformed him by over 250 points despite missing races due to injury. These results may have influenced Ducati’s considerations as they aim to refresh their roster.

Lorenzo Identifies Aprilia as a Viable Alternative for Bagnaia

While Bagnaia has been linked to Yamaha, the team is expected to prioritize Jorge Martin. Additionally, with Toprak Razgatlioglu potentially securing a factory ride by 2027, Yamaha’s options for Bagnaia appear limited. Yet, if Martin departs from Aprilia, a spot next to Marco Bezzecchi—who recently extended his contract—could open up.

Lorenzo believes Bagnaia’s riding style would suit Aprilia well. Furthermore, as Ducati gears up to field an all-Spanish lineup, Bagnaia joining Aprilia would preserve Italian representation in the premier class.

Projecting Bagnaia’s 2027 Team: An Italian Partnership with Bezzecchi

Marco Bezzecchi would welcome a teammate like Bagnaia, sharing the distinction of being alumni from Valentino Rossi’s academy. Lorenzo remarked on Bagnaia’s rapidly evolving circumstances:

“In a year and a half, Bagnaia’s situation has changed completely,”

Jorge Lorenzo said.

“From being the undisputed number one in Ducati, now it seems there’s no room for him. That’s how it works: you’re worth what you show in the last race, and his last season wasn’t up to par. He’s a rider with very precise and clean riding, so I’d see him doing well in Yamaha.

Then I’d see him doing well in Aprilia: with Bezzecchi, he’d make an all-Italian team, and, media-wise, that would be excellent.”

Reasons Behind Bagnaia’s Reluctance to Join VR46 Team

Though the VR46 squad could serve as a safety net for Bagnaia, the rider is unlikely to accept this option. Continuation of VR46 as a Ducati satellite team after 2027 might be perceived as a step down for a rider of Bagnaia’s caliber, who is focused on securing a factory ride. Bagnaia remains one of the most accomplished riders on the grid, second only to Marquez in accolades.

Aprilia has emerged as a formidable challenger to Ducati’s dominance heading into the new season, yet concerns about their resources and capacity to develop a competitive bike for 2027 persist. This may cause Bagnaia to consider offers from Japanese factory teams, which could provide stronger technical backing, although no guarantees exist.

Implications for Bagnaia’s Career and the MotoGP Landscape

The uncertainty surrounding Bagnaia’s Ducati future underscores the competitiveness and volatility within MotoGP, where even world champions must continually prove their worth. The possibility of a move to Aprilia or Yamaha could reshape team dynamics, providing Bagnaia with new opportunities to challenge for titles. Meanwhile, Ducati’s strategic pivot toward an all-Spanish lineup reflects a broader team vision that may influence rider selections for years to come.
