Brad Keselowski has been officially cleared to participate in the upcoming Daytona 500 after passing a crucial medical evaluation at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The RFK Racing driver-owner is returning to competition less than two months after sustaining a broken femur during a family ski trip, aiming to secure his first victory in this prestigious NASCAR event.
Recovery Journey and Testing Milestones
Following surgery, Keselowski engaged in a rigorous rehabilitation program with medical professionals and physical therapists to regain full leg strength and mobility. This disciplined process culminated in a thorough X-ray assessment in late January, which confirmed remarkable healing. Subsequently, he completed a critical behind-the-wheel test in a Ford Mustang Dark Horse at Charlotte, demonstrating his ability to enter and exit the vehicle safely—an essential skill given the nature of the initial races, known for their high risk of multi-car accidents.
Keselowski’s Drive Toward the Daytona 500
Keselowski will return to the No. 6 Ford Mustang Dark Horse as he continues to chase a Daytona 500 win, a key achievement still missing from his list of racing accomplishments. He already boasts victories in other major events, including the Coca-Cola 600, Southern 500, Brickyard 400, and a summer race at Daytona, heightening anticipation around his comeback.
“This process was about discipline and patience. There were no shortcuts,”
Keselowski said in a press release.
“I had a poster in my workout area that said, ‘Daytona. Earned not given,’ and that became my mindset every day. The focus was on getting stronger, improving mobility, and making sure I was truly ready to race.”
“The Daytona 500 is the most coveted race we have. The history, the names on that trophy, it speaks for itself,”
Keselowski added.
“I’ve won at Daytona, but I haven’t won the 500, and that’s always been one I want. After everything it took to get back to this point, having another chance at it means everything.”
Team Perspective and Upcoming Challenges
RFK Racing expressed strong support for Keselowski’s return, emphasizing his determination and dedication during recovery. The team is confident he is ready to compete at the highest level, bringing experience and resilience to the challenging start of the NASCAR Cup Series season. Keselowski’s return not only boosts the team’s prospects but also adds excitement to the Daytona 500, often regarded as NASCAR’s crown jewel.
