Cadillac Honors Andretti with MAC-26 Name for F1 Debut

Cadillac has chosen to pay tribute to 1978 Formula 1 world champion Mario Andretti by naming its inaugural F1 car MAC-26, which stands for Mario Andretti Cadillac. Andretti, who now serves as a consultant to the team, brings a historic American racing legacy that the new Cadillac Formula 1 entry aims to embody as it prepares for its debut in the 2026 season.

Legacy of Mario Andretti Inspires New American Racing Effort

Andretti is one of only two Americans to have won the Formula 1 world championship, securing the title in 1978. Born in Italy, he emigrated to the United States as a teenager and became a legendary figure in motorsport through multiple disciplines. Beyond his F1 success, Andretti won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969 and achieved multiple championships in IndyCar. He also triumphed in NASCAR’s premier race, the Daytona 500.

Reflecting on the honor, Andretti said,

“Racing has been the joy of my life. It is the ultimate compliment that the Cadillac Formula 1 Team sees those years as meaningful and worthy of recording with this honour.”

As he approaches his 86th birthday, he expressed gratitude for the ongoing recognition of his contributions to racing history:

“I cherish the opportunity that it gives me to have a lasting bond with F1 and am genuinely appreciative of everyone who continues to acknowledge my part in racing history.”

Driver Lineup and Team Leadership Look Toward Debut Season

The Cadillac team will field two experienced drivers for the 2026 campaign: Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Michael Andretti, Mario’s son, who raced for McLaren in 1993, played a key role in initiating Cadillac’s F1 efforts by submitting their application to the FIA. Initially, the team’s entry was denied, but Formula One Management later reversed the decision, allowing Cadillac to join the grid.

Graeme Lowdon, the team principal, recalled an early conversation with Mario Andretti:

“At the start of my own journey with the team, he asked me not to let him down. I hope that he will be proud to see the Cadillac Formula 1 Team car bearing his name finally take to the grid.”

Significance of Cadillac’s Entry into Formula 1

The debut of the MAC-26 in Australia will mark a significant milestone for Cadillac as it brings American heritage back to the pinnacle of motorsport. The team’s approach, guided by Andretti’s inspiring story, emphasizes that an American squad has an important place on the F1 stage today. CEO Dan Towriss highlighted this sentiment, stating,

“Naming our first chassis MAC-26 reflects the spirit Mario carried into Formula 1 and the belief that an American team belongs on this stage. His story embodies the American dream and inspires how we approach building this team every day.”

This launch is not just about racing but also about carrying forward a legacy that connects past champions with the future of American motorsport on the global Formula 1 platform.
