Carlos Sainz and Alonso Face Tough F1 2026 Season Starts

Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso have experienced challenging starts to the Formula 1 2026 season as new technical regulations take effect. Both drivers entered this new era with high hopes, yet early testing events at Barcelona and Bahrain revealed several obstacles affecting their campaigns, highlighting uncertainties around their teams’ performance and development pace.

Williams and Aston Martin Struggle Despite Promising Offseason Preparations

Williams ended the previous season in fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship and sought to capitalize on that momentum as the sport transitioned into 2026. Meanwhile, Aston Martin arrived encouraged by the hire of renowned aerodynamicist Adrian Newey, a fresh works Honda engine partnership, and the introduction of a sophisticated wind tunnel at their Silverstone facility.

However, Williams encountered setbacks before official testing even began, missing the initial private shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya due to failure in passing FIA crash tests and grappling with an overweight FW48 chassis. Aston Martin managed to participate in Barcelona but completed only limited mileage. Across the three subsequent nine-day testing sessions in Bahrain, the team logged fewer than 400 laps collectively.

Persistent technical issues also affected Aston Martin, notably with the Honda power unit and a self-developed gearbox that proved troublesome to resolve.

Shared Challenges Prompt Dialogue Between Sainz and Alonso

During the testing period, Carlos Sainz spoke with Fernando Alonso about their mutual difficulties navigating the early 2026 season conditions. The two Spanish drivers, both facing complicated team situations, connected over their circumstances while in the paddock.

“I ran into Fernando one day in the paddock and we talked for a good 20 minutes, catching up a bit,”

Sainz told Mundo Deportivo.

“And well, he’s in a similar situation to me, not ideal, complicated, but eager to see what his team is capable of bringing and to see his team’s ability to react.”

Team Adaptability Will Determine Progress During 2026 Campaign

Sainz emphasized the importance of how quickly and effectively their respective teams could respond to the current difficulties facing their cars. While hoping to compete strongly against each other, Sainz expressed goodwill towards the two-time World Champion Alonso and his team’s potential to improve after Bahrain’s struggles.

“In the end, we both depend on nothing more and nothing less than seeing the reaction capacity we have in our team to the complicated situation in which each of us finds ourselves,”

he said.

“But I also wish him all the best, and I hope that Aston Martin and Honda improve on what they showed in Bahrain.”

Implications for the Season Ahead

The difficult early testing performances highlight a cautious outlook for Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso heading into the 2026 Formula 1 season. The ability of Williams and Aston Martin to overcome technical setbacks and refine their cars will be pivotal in determining how competitive both drivers can be as the year unfolds. Fans and teams alike will be closely watching the development responses to gauge whether these initial issues are temporary hurdles or signs of longer-term challenges in this new regulatory era.
