Carlos Sainz Predicts Russell or Verstappen for 2026 Title

Carlos Sainz has made an early prediction about the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, suggesting that the battle will be between George Russell and Max Verstappen. The Williams driver shared this forecast after observing the recent pre-season testing and considering the evolving competitive landscape.

During a discussion about the upcoming season, Sainz pointed to Mercedes’ George Russell or Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who is aiming to reclaim the title after a recent loss, as the top contenders for the championship next year.

Williams’ 2025 Season and the Path to 2026

After facing challenges in the first half of the 2025 Formula 1 season, Sainz bounced back strongly with two podium finishes, helping Williams climb to fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship by the year’s end. His move to Williams was motivated by the 2026 regulation overhaul, which many expect will reshuffle the competitive order and create fresh opportunities.

Early testing results indicate that Mercedes and Ferrari have maintained strong packages, while McLaren and Red Bull appear poised to join them in forming a front-running quartet for 2026. Williams, however, encountered difficulties at the start of the season, opting not to bring a physical car package to the Barcelona shakedown tests in January, instead focusing on virtual track testing to familiarize themselves with the FW48 model.

The team improved their preparation in Bahrain by completing the highest number of laps during six days of testing, although most teams managed to gain significant mileage during this period, setting the stage for a tightly contested 2026 season.

Insights on Red Bull’s Position Following 2026 Testing

The outcome of the recent Bahrain testing generated much discussion, with data pointing towards a possible engine advantage for Red Bull, confirming comments made by key figures in the sport. This adds intrigue to the competition for the upcoming season, as teams finalize their setups under the new regulations.

When interviewed on the Beyond the Grid podcast about potential championship winners, Sainz declared:

“I’ll say two names, okay? George Russell or Max Verstappen,”

though he declined to elaborate further. Instead, he credited his prediction to observations made during three days of Bahrain testing:

“From what I’ve seen in Bahrain in three days of testing.”

Sainz’s Ambitions and Expectations With Williams

While his forecast excludes Williams from the immediate title fight, Sainz remains committed to helping the team return to prominence. He described his multi-year contract with Williams as a “life project,” aiming to elevate the squad to its past competitive heights during what should be his physical prime in Formula 1.

When asked about what would define a successful season for Williams, Sainz emphasized continuous advancement rather than immediate race results:

“I’m not going to look too much at the results, because if there’s a year that is difficult for results and to judge where everyone is, it’s going to be this one. But, progress in every area.”

Responding to the prospect of securing top-three finishes, he added:

“I’m going to try. I hope so.”

At 31 years old, Sainz views the coming years as a critical period to pursue a clear goal:

“I’m 31 years old now, and I feel I can enter now, let’s say, the next few years of my career, with a very clear target in mind, which is try and help this team go back to the front of the field,”

He further explained his vision for the future:

“If you ask me in three, four years’ time, where I would like to be, I’d say, ideally, fighting for a championship with Williams. Being 31, there’s nothing that would make me happier than putting all my effort, using the peak of my career to bring back one of the greatest teams F1 back to the top.”

“If we manage to achieve that, I’ll look back being very, very proud for sure.”

Looking Ahead to 2026 and Beyond

Carlos Sainz’s prediction highlighting George Russell and Max Verstappen as frontrunners reflects the current competitive outlook at the outset of the 2026 season. With regulatory changes and evolving technical developments shaping the championship, his focus on gradual progress with Williams underscores the challenges smaller teams face in closing the gap to established leaders.

As the season unfolds, Sainz’s trajectory with Williams will be closely watched, especially given his ambition to restore the historic team to championship contention. The next few years could define his legacy and reshape the Formula 1 field as new rivalries and rival manufacturers contest for supremacy under revised regulations.
