Carson Hocevar, the 23-year-old driver for Spire Motorsports, opened up about the significant sacrifices his family made to support his ambitions in NASCAR. From his modest beginnings to reaching the Cup Series, Hocevar highlighted the perseverance and struggles that fueled his racing career.
Raised around his father’s small coin and jewelry shop, which was about the size of a typical house, Hocevar’s childhood was far from glamorous. Instead of grand race tracks, his earliest competitions took place atop the glass showcases of the family store, where he spent time racing die-cast cars.

he recalled, showing the impatience he had for customers disrupting his childhood play areas.
Behind this playful memory was a tougher reality. Hocevar’s parents worked relentlessly, often late into the night, just to keep their small business afloat. The main revenue came not from customer visits but from sorting precious metals and coins behind the scenes, making shoppers an occasional interruption rather than a profit source.
When customers were in there, they couldn’t actually do what made the money for the store,
Hocevar explained.
The family endured long hours and tight finances, grabbing fast food at 1 a.m. and staying awake until 3 a.m. to handle schoolwork. Sustaining this lifestyle was a challenge few could manage, yet the tide shifted when the values of gold and silver rose, easing financial pressures somewhat.
Family Effort and the Cost of Racing
This financial shift brought a critical advantage for young Carson: the ability to afford tires, one of the largest expenses in quarter-midget racing, where he first made his mark. His mother committed to driving him across the country for races, while his father juggled work to cover mounting costs. The entire family worked as a unit, with no assurance their investment would pay off.
Despite his father’s hard work, he could only attend two to five races per year due to budget limits, making each appearance especially meaningful.
It was always a big deal when dad came to the race,
Hocevar shared quietly, underscoring the weight of those rare moments.
Unlike many peers whose parents might cheer from the stands regularly, Hocevar’s dad’s attendance was a symbol of sacrifice and dedication against enormous obstacles.
Hocevar credits this unwavering family commitment as the key factor that kept him focused in a sport notorious for high dropout rates. Talent alone is insufficient without financial backing and consistent support, which he thankfully received even when the resources were scarce.
If they weren’t so dedicated to that, it would have been really easy to quit,
he noted.
I think the only reason my dad worked so hard was to afford the tires and afford racing.

Not everybody’s parents would ever even consider doing that. I don’t know if I could do that for whatever is next for me.
