On Friday, February 13, Chandler Smith pulled off a remarkable last-lap pass while racing four wide to claim victory at the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event held at Daytona International Speedway. Smith’s bold move on lap 101, during an overtime finish, earned him his eighth NCTS win in a thrilling finish against fierce competition.
As the checkered flag approached, John Hunter Nemechek led the field out of Turn 4, with a strong push from pole sitter Ty Majeski. Smith, driving the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford, dove to the inside low line between Nemechek’s No. 4 Toyota and the wall, effectively drag racing his way to cross the finish line first. The race featured a record 36 lead changes and was extended into overtime after a serious crash involving three trucks on lap 95 of the scheduled 100 laps.
Smith’s Tactical Drive and Overtime Triumph
Starting from 10th place, Smith consistently stayed within striking distance of the front runners, positioning himself carefully in the top five during the critical final laps. His ability to anticipate and execute precise moves allowed him to overtake Nemechek and secure the victory in dramatic fashion. This result further cements Smith’s status as a leading contender in the series.

I want to thank God for blessing me with such a great group of men and women around me at Front Row Motorsports,
Smith expressed with gratitude.
“Ty Majeski is one the best Ford teammates I have ever worked with and that’s how we just won that race. He stayed cemented to a Ford and we took the win.”
I was surprised the No. 62 (Nemechek) didn’t block the lower line. It seemed the seas literally parted and the No. 88 (Majeski) just stayed committed to me.
I can’t thank him enough.
Giovanni Ruggiero Chooses Competition Over Cooperation
Giovanni Ruggiero, driving the No. 17 Toyota for TRICON Garage, earned second place, matching his finish from last year’s Daytona opener. Near the race’s climax, Ruggiero faced a crucial decision but opted not to aid Nemechek’s bid for the win.
You just have to do whatever it takes to win and that’s what I did for my team,
Ruggiero stated firmly.
“I probably would have pushed John Hunter to the win, but he tried to wreck me twice.”
I think, overall, we need to do better as Toyotas. I thought me, Tanner (Gray) and Taylor (Gray) worked together pretty well. Everyone else seemed like they were out there on their own.
Carson Hocevar’s Stage Win Marred by Struggles
Carson Hocevar claimed the Stage 1 victory on lap 20, narrowly edging out Tanner Gray at the finish line. Throughout much of this stage, Hocevar led in his No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, often racing alongside teammate Micheal McDowell, who drives the No. 7 Chevrolet.
Gray advanced to the outside, taking valuable track position in his No. 15 TRICON Garage Toyota. The stage’s top-five drivers also included Christian Eckes, John Hunter Nemechek, and McDowell. However, Hocevar’s night took a downturn as he suffered multiple flat tires and spins, causing several caution periods. He ultimately finished 35th out of a 37-truck field.
Smith Secures Stage 2 Win Under Caution
An incident involving Jake Garcia and Tony Stewart on lap 36 led to Stage 2 concluding under caution. With the race frozen behind the safety vehicle, Chandler Smith was awarded the stage victory and accompanying points. Following Smith in the stage standings were Layne Riggs, pole sitter Ty Majeski, Taylor Gray, and Micheal McDowell.
Notable Incidents Affecting Race Outcomes
The race saw early challenges for several prominent drivers. Cleetus McFarland’s night ended quickly after he spun and collided with the inside wall, prompting the first caution. Later, a caution on lap 36 sidelined Tony Stewart, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Hall of Fame inductee, following a wreck.
Despite the chaos, Travis Pastrana, famed for his XGames success, completed the race in 15th place, demonstrating resilience on the challenging track.
Implications of the Daytona Race for the Season Ahead
Chandler Smith’s dramatic four-wide victory at Daytona highlights his growing prowess and determination within the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, setting a competitive tone for the remainder of the season. The intense competition, marked by a record number of lead changes, underscores the unpredictability and excitement fans can expect.
The outcomes involving key drivers such as Giovanni Ruggiero and Carson Hocevar illustrate the dynamic alliances and individual battles that shape this series. Meanwhile, incidents affecting veterans like Tony Stewart and rising stars show how experience and spirited performances combine to influence race results.
Moving forward, Smith’s triumph at Daytona not only boosts his confidence but also strengthens Front Row Motorsports’ position among top teams. Fans will eagerly watch how Smith and contenders like Nemechek, Majeski, and others respond to the challenges ahead in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
