Keelan Harvick, the youngest son of NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick, has disclosed that an overwhelming fan incident involving Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc dramatically shifted his racing aspirations away from Europe and Formula 1 toward a NASCAR career. This event occurred during a karting competition in Italy, where the 13-year-old was competing alongside Leclerc’s nephew.
Keelan recounted that Charles Leclerc attending the race created an unexpected frenzy. Fans, eager to see the F1 star, flooded the event and disrupted the venue, pushing Keelan to reconsider his future in European motorsport. The intense crowd presence at a karting race was not what he anticipated, prompting him to refocus his racing ambitions closer to home in the United States.
Fan Frenzy at Karting Event Sparks Realization for Keelan
Leclerc’s nephew was part of Keelan’s racing team, which is why the Formula 1 driver showed up at the event. However, the ensuing crowd overwhelmed the young racer.
“I was in Italy racing and Charles Leclerc’s nephew raced on my team, and he came to watch the race,”
Keelan said to the Associated Press.
“All the fans followed him there and they broke down the tent.”
Hundreds of fans descended on the go-kart venue, all vying for a glimpse of Leclerc. The scene was too much for Keelan to handle at such a young age.
“It was just a lot of people and just not for me,”
he added.
“There was like hundreds of people at a go-kart race just trying to meet him.”
This experience highlighted the differences between the European racing environment and what Keelan wanted for his development.

Turning Toward NASCAR and Securing Support from Toyota Racing Development
Following this unsettling episode, Keelan chose to abandon his European racing plans and fully embrace NASCAR career opportunities in the United States. His decision has quickly gained momentum after Toyota Racing Development signed him to a long-term contract, demonstrating considerable confidence in his potential.
In 2024, Keelan will race for RACKLEY W.A.R. and Kevin Harvick, Inc., competing in numerous late model events nationwide. His car will be the No. 62 Toyota Camry, sponsored primarily by ExxonMobil. This alliance marks a new chapter for the Harvick family, as Kevin Harvick raced exclusively with Chevrolet and Ford during his 23-year career in NASCAR, never aligning with Toyota.
Family Influence Shapes Keelan’s Career Strategy
Kevin Harvick, who retired in 2023 with 60 Cup Series wins and the 2014 championship title, now works as a Fox Sports analyst. He played a key role in deciding that Toyota’s development program was the best fit for his son’s growth.
“We’ve concentrated a lot on development and have a theory on how it should go,”
Kevin explained.
“I felt like the Toyota process matched what we would do.”
He emphasized that Toyota’s commitment extends beyond racing skills, focusing on personal growth as well.
“The effort that Toyota puts into, not only the driving piece of it, but the human piece of it is very important to us as a family,”
Kevin added.
Early Triumphs Signal a Promising NASCAR Future for Keelan Harvick
Keelan has already demonstrated his capacity for success on the track. In December, he became the youngest winner of the Snowflake 125 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. Shortly afterward, he claimed victory at the Icebreaker race held at Florence Motor Speedway, also as the youngest champion in that event.
His accolades include being crowned the 2024 INEX Young Lions National Champion and winning multiple events during the 2025 season on both the zMAX CARS Tour Pro Late Model and the CARS Tour West Pro Late Model Series. Notably, he is the first driver to win Pro Late Model races in both series within the same year, underscoring his versatility and skill.
Looking Ahead: Aiming for NASCAR’s Biggest Stage
Toyota Racing Development has high hopes for Keelan, projecting that he could be capable of competing in the prestigious Daytona 500 as early as 2031—a race his father famously won back in 2007. Keelan himself has set clearly defined goals, stating,
“My main goal is to be just like my Dad and just try to make it to the Cup Series.”
