Darlington Raceway: Chase Briscoe’s emotional bond through triumphs and tragedy, from heartbreak to fatherhood and victories.

Chase Briscoe‘s relationship with Darlington Raceway is a testament to the emotional rollercoaster that is the world of NASCAR. From heart-wrenching tragedies to glorious victories, Briscoe’s journey highlights his profound connection to the famed racetrack. In 2020, amidst the backdrop of Darlington, Briscoe faced a life-altering moment when his wife Marissa suffered a miscarriage just before the Toyota 300 Xfinity Series race. Despite the immense heartache, Briscoe managed to triumph at the race, dedicating his victory to his wife and the memory of their unborn child.

The heartbreak of that moment would, over time, give way to blessings and renewed hope. A year after the loss, the Briscoes welcomed their daughter Brooks, and later, twins. Briscoe’s return to Darlington in 2021 saw him clinch the prestigious Southern 500, a victory that qualified him for the NASCAR Cup playoffs, further cementing his special bond with the track.

Fast forward to 2025, and Briscoe is back at Darlington for Throwback Weekend, this time behind the wheel of the #19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, replacing Martin Truex Jr. Despite the memories of past sorrow, returning to Darlington is a poignant experience for both Chase and Marissa. “It’s definitely special (to return to Darlington),” Briscoe remarked, reflecting on the significance of the track in his life. “The win I had in 2020 was big from a career standpoint, but the day before, I was literally in this parking lot right here.”

The decision to share their personal tragedy with the public proved to be a turning point. Briscoe noted that the support from the NASCAR community and fans provided a much-needed emotional lift. “Without sharing it, I think my demeanor at the racetrack would have been different,” he explained to The Athletic. The compassion and support they received were invaluable during such a challenging period.

The return to Darlington, especially being four years removed from the tragic event, allowed Briscoe to reflect on how far he and Marissa have come. “To be able to be here four years removed last year and my wife being a couple weeks away from giving birth to twins, and then we had Brooks and then now (this week) … it’s a special place,” he said, underscoring Darlington’s importance in their personal and professional lives.

For Briscoe, a native of Mitchell, Indiana, who now calls South Carolina home, Darlington Raceway represents more than just a physical location. It symbolizes a personal narrative filled with profound emotional and professional milestones. “It’s the closest track to our house,” he said, emphasizing the unique connection. “Darlington has played a significant part of my life in more ways than one. Obviously, the family side (and) the emotional day that that was, but then even from a career standpoint.”

The sense of home and belonging that Darlington brings is palpable for Briscoe, “Darlington has played a significant part of my life in more ways than one, obviously from the family side, the emotional day that was, but even from a career standpoint, not even the race in 2020, and even last year, what that did for me career-wise. It’s definitely a special place to the Briscoe family, and it’s always special every time I come here because of that.”

As Briscoe readies himself for another race at Darlington, anticipation hangs in the air. Sunday offers him the chance to add to the rich tapestry of memories and emotions associated with the legendary ‘Lady In Black.’ With each lap, he will be writing the latest chapter of his unique bond with Darlington Raceway, making it clear that this track will forever hold a distinctive place in his heart.
