DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Chase Elliott was moments away from claiming his first Daytona 500 victory on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway before a last-lap crash erased his chance. Elliott, the popular NASCAR driver, climbed out of his car and sat stunned on the outside wall just feet from the finish line, his potential triumph extinguished in a wreck involving Riley Herbst.
The race winner, Tyler Reddick, celebrated amid fireworks while Elliott struggled to comprehend how close he had come to victory and the cheers that would have sounded in his hometown of Dawsonville, Georgia. Elliott’s loss was a major disappointment for him and his fans, as well as Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron, who said,
“He had a great shot at it coming off four,”
and added, “It’s a bummer for sure.”
Daytona 500 Drama Highlights Intense Final Laps
Coming into the race, Elliott was already recognized as a strong contender, having won a qualifying race and holding two pole positions in his career. Despite early promise, the 30-year-old driver finished fourth in this year’s Daytona 500, extending his frustrating streak to 0-for-11 in attempts to win the event.
Elliott recounted the moment he thought victory was within reach, saying,
“We were leading the Daytona 500 off (turn) four coming to the checkered flag, and didn’t win.”
The crash unfolded after Carson Hocevar, the leader, was spun out on the last lap, leaving Elliott in control until Herbst’s contact pushed his car’s nose into the wall. Reddick then surged past the wreckage to claim the win for Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing, adding star power and excitement to this year’s race.

Reflecting on Past Hard-Luck Finishes at Daytona
Chase Elliott’s Daytona 500 misfortune places him among a list of drivers who suffered heartbreak late in the race, including names such as Fireball Roberts, Donnie Allison, Mark Martin, and Dale Earnhardt, whose tire failure just shy of the finish line in 1990 allowed Derrike Cope to steal the victory. While Elliott’s father, Bill Elliott, a Hall of Famer and two-time Daytona 500 champion, has won the prestigious event, Chase has yet to cross that threshold despite 21 career Cup wins.
Jeff Gordon, a three-time winner of the race and now a Hendrick Motorsports executive, was visibly anxious in the pits during the final moments and expressed frustration as Elliott lost his chance. Elliott reflected on the split-second decisions that played a role in the crash, admitting,
“I just felt like Tyler was coming so quick, I kind of blocked one direction. He went the other way.”
Elliott’s Determination Remains Unshaken Despite Setback
Though disappointed, Elliott remains focused on future opportunities.
“I’m not the type of person that ever lets myself get there in the first place,”
he said, emphasizing his resilience. He also reflected on the tactical nature of the final lap, stating,
“You can run it through your mind 1,000 times, do you do something different. I feel like if I had thrown a double block on (Reddick), probably would have just crashed us at that point in time.”
Despite the ongoing challenges in securing a Daytona 500 title, Elliott has consistently shown his capability with seven top-20 finishes in the last eight years including a runner-up result in 2021. He remains confident that a win will come in time, saying,
“I think you have to trust in that a little bit; keep your head down, stay working, and if there’s a day and a time for us, then there is. We’ll enjoy that moment if it ever comes.”
Significance of the Race and Outlook for Elliott
The dramatic conclusion to the Daytona 500 underlines the unpredictable nature of NASCAR’s biggest race, where leading the final lap is no guarantee of victory. For Chase Elliott, the loss adds to his long quest to join his father and a select group of champions who have conquered this demanding event. At the same time, Tyler Reddick’s triumph under Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing banner generates fresh attention and excitement for the sport.
As the NASCAR season continues, Elliott’s performance and determination leave fans hopeful that the Daytona 500 crown will one day be within his reach, reinforcing his status as one of the sport’s top competitors.
