Christopher Bell started on the outside of the front row for the first overtime of the Autotrader 400 at EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta on Sunday, but his race ended abruptly when his No. 20 Toyota collided with the outside wall before reaching Turn 1. The wreck was triggered by an aggressive restart move from Carson Hocevar, who attempted to squeeze between Bell and race leader Bubba Wallace, cutting off Bell’s opportunity to claim his first win of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Hocevar had initially told Bell he intended to push him on the restart, but he quickly changed course—a fact that did not surprise Bell.
“That’s what he communicated to me, but you never expect anything — especially from him,”
Bell said, via Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports.
“I haven’t seen a replay. Maybe there was a hole there and that’s what he thought he was gonna try and fill. I don’t know.”
Bell’s Strong Run Cut Short Despite Leadership Laps
During the race, Bell had led nine laps, showcasing a strong performance on the track where he was the previous year’s winner. He skillfully navigated through earlier incidents to position himself for a final push towards the checkered flag. However, Hocevar’s forceful move off the restart resulted in Bell’s crash and forced a disappointing 21st-place finish for Hocevar as well.
Despite the setback, Bell disagreed with the notion that the victory was unfairly taken from him.
“It wasn’t taken away. Nothing’s ever expected or deserved here,”
Bell said.
“We were in position and that’s all you can ask for. I was proud for making it to the end. The fall race last year, I had a super fast car and took myself out of it before we even had a shot to race at it.”
Bell credited his team with making crucial adjustments earlier in the race that helped improve his car’s handling, allowing him to compete up front.

“Earlier in the day, the guys made great adjustments at getting my car driving better and then as soon as it drove the way I needed it to, we were able to go to the front. So, happy with that but no points.”
Looking Forward: Bell Aims to Bounce Back at Circuit of The Americas
Following the setback at EchoPark Speedway, Christopher Bell and the Joe Gibbs Racing team will regroup and head to Circuit of The Americas (COTA) next Sunday, where Bell previously secured a victory last season. The Atlanta crash has heightened the intensity around Bell, whose season remains full of promise despite the destroyed opportunity at this race.
This incident underscores the high stakes and turbulent nature of the NASCAR Cup Series, where aggressive driving and split-second decisions can decisively influence outcomes. The dynamics between Bell, Hocevar, and other drivers like Bubba Wallace continue to fuel anticipation for upcoming races as the season progresses.
