Connor Zilisch Praises NASCAR Cup Drivers’ Smart Moves

After three starts in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, Connor Zilisch finds himself struggling to find consistent success. Last Sunday at Circuit of the Americas, despite showing strong speed, a series of incidents during the race disrupted his rhythm and resulted in a 14th-place finish. This outcome extends a difficult start for the Trackhouse Racing driver, who currently holds 32 points and sits 32nd in the championship standings.

His current performance starkly contrasts with his breakthrough campaign last year in the junior O’Reilly Series, where he accumulated 10 victories, 20 top-five finishes, and 23 top-10 results, earning a runner-up finish for the season. While Zilisch set a high benchmark in the lower-tier series, that level of dominance has yet to carry over in his rookie Cup season.

Differences in Racing Styles Between Junior and Cup Series

Throughout last weekend’s race at COTA, Zilisch used his challenges as learning opportunities, analyzing how the intensity shifts when competing alongside more experienced veterans. He reflected on the nature of racing aggression and strategy in the Cup Series compared to the junior ranks.

I feel like it’s aggressive in Cup, but when I was coming through the field at COTA, there were a lot more guys who were generous than I remember on Saturdays. Even when you get to the top-10, guys aren’t racing you when they know that you’re faster. On Saturdays, I feel like every guy races you hard for every spot, even if you’re a second faster,

said the Trackhouse Racing driver.

I can’t say the restarts are any less aggressive in Cup because I got taken out twice last Sunday. The Cup guys are all really smart. I feel like they make a lot more intelligent moves to put you in bad spots. It’s a lot harder to make up positions in those moments than it is on Saturday,

he continued.

Zilisch Prepares with Caution for Phoenix Raceway Appearance

Looking ahead, Phoenix Raceway presents Zilisch with an opportunity that has historically been favorable for him. At Phoenix, he dominated much of the Desert Diamond Casino 100 in the ARCA Menards Series by leading the majority of laps to secure victory. Additionally, last year he earned a third-place finish in the No. 88 JR Motorsports car and concluded the season second in the standings.

Despite these positives, Zilisch approaches Phoenix with a steady mindset, aware of the track’s distinctive challenges. The multiple racing lanes and the dogleg section create openings for complex battles, especially during restarts when drivers navigate through the tight dogleg before accelerating onto the banking.

He described the physical demands of handling the transition from the flat apron back onto the banked curve, sometimes requiring careful positioning to maintain control as the field roars through. The No. 88 driver’s awareness of these factors, coupled with the tactical nature of Cup competitors, highlights the ongoing learning curve he faces in securing his first victory at NASCAR’s highest level.

What Lies Ahead for Zilisch’s NASCAR Progression

Connor Zilisch’s cautious approach and observations about the calculated moves from seasoned Cup drivers underline the complexities of breaking into the top tier of NASCAR competition. His progress at Phoenix and subsequent events will be closely watched to see if he can harness his evident skill and secure a breakthrough win. Meanwhile, his adaptation to the smarter and more aggressive racecraft in the Cup Series remains critical for improving his standing and potential long-term success.
