Jim Zilisch, Connor’s father, recalls a moment from when Connor was only seven years old that made it clear something extraordinary was unfolding.
“This kid is either going to be a race car driver or President of the United States,”
Jim thought, sensing his son’s unique presence.
“He’s just got that aura about him, and he’s had it his entire life,”
Jim added, highlighting the early promise his son showed.
Growing Up with Racing as a Foundation
Connor’s journey began remarkably early when he climbed into a go-kart at age four, even though he was younger than the minimum age requirement at Carolina Motorsports Park. Impressed by his natural ability, track officials allowed him to compete, setting the stage for his career. Before transitioning to gas-powered karts, Connor practiced diligently in their suburban Charlotte neighborhood under careful watch. To keep him safe, Jim tied a long green rope to the kart and ran behind it, providing a makeshift safety tether—an amusing memory recalled by Jim:
“I’d pay $10,000 for that video,”
he said, laughing about neighbors who filmed the scene.
As Connor’s skill grew, the family traveled extensively to participate in races nationwide. This phase was not without challenges; other fathers at an Indiana race suspected cheating due to Connor’s consistent victories, while at Homestead-Miami Speedway, racing legend Juan Pablo Montoya observed him carefully, recognizing genuine talent.
“After a while, they all came to realize it was skill, not cheating,”
Jim explained.
“But there were an awful lot of eyebrows raised.”
The Influence of a Champion Gymnast Mother
Connor’s mother, Jan, contributed significantly to his development as a competitor. A Canadian gymnast who competed in the 1984 Olympic Games and earned All-American honors at the University of Florida, Jan’s athletic background influenced Connor’s work ethic. Her international experience competing in places like Romania and Hungary during the 1980s gave her insight into high-level competition. Starting at age 11, Connor lived in Europe for extended periods to race karts against some of the world’s best drivers, often away from family.
With both parents working full-time—Jan holds a PhD in pharmacology and works for a cancer biotech company—they entrusted his care to coach and mechanic Gary Willis during those months overseas. Jan recalls her son’s resilience:
“He never complained, he rarely called,”
she said.
“He just loved being out and discovering different countries.”
When Connor voiced frustration about missing school and home, Jan was firm:
“I used to have to sit in the gym for 40 hours a week and travel across the world for gymnastics,”
she reminded him.
“And there was no end of the road where I could get paid.”
International Success and Transition to NASCAR
Connor’s determination led to a significant victory in 2017 when he won a major karting race in Italy, outpacing 164 top drivers globally, including current Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli. Despite this achievement, the family faced financial limits that prevented pursuing a career in Formula 1, leading Connor to return to the United States uncertain about his professional racing future.
