Connor Zilisch Slams Corey Day After Crash at COTA NASCAR Race

At the NASCAR O’Reilly Series Auto Parts race held at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), attention centered on teammates Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch, who started on the front row and were considered top contenders. While van Gisbergen secured the victory, Zilisch’s race was marred by issues, resulting in a disappointing 21st place finish after a late-race collision with rookie Corey Day amid intense competition.

Race Troubles and the Late Collision That Changed Everything

Throughout the event, Zilisch struggled with brake troubles that forced an extended pit stop, but he impressively recovered from the back of the field to run in fourth place during the final laps. As the drivers exited Turn 2, Zilisch found himself alongside Corey Day, a promising newcomer from Hendrick Motorsports. Day attempted to move up behind Zilisch but instead made contact, causing Zilisch to spin off the track and sustain damage to his car’s front nose.

Frustrated by the incident, Zilisch radioed that Day was a “hack” as he rejoined the race, having lost over 15 positions. Despite this setback, Day managed to finish fifth, marking consecutive top-five finishes early in his rookie season, though his aggressive driving had already drawn criticism in previous races, including the one at Atlanta.

Zilisch Voices His Displeasure After the Crash

After exiting his car, Zilisch expressed his frustration candidly, highlighting the difficulties his team faced during the race and the disappointment of the outcome.

Yeah, I mean, I think everybody saw what happened,

said Zilisch.

You know, I don’t need to explain myself, but really unfortunate. Our Chevrolet was really fast. We had to change the left rear brake and the entire caliper. I hate that it ended like that for us. We were gonna finish top five there and the same guy that does this every week, does this. Hopefully he can figure it out but yeah, unfortunate.

-Connor Zilisch, NASCAR driver

He further reflected on the progress made before the crash and his expectations moving forward.

It was a lot of fun, we made up a lot of ground and we were one of the fastest cars all day long. All I want is an apology, but the guy just stands over there and stares at me, and just makes it worse, but he’ll figure it out and you know, we’ll go on tomorrow. I’m trying to have a better day tomorrow.

Corey Day Responds and Explains His Perspective

Corey Day acknowledged the incident and offered an explanation, pointing to mechanical issues that may have hampered his control on the track during the critical moment. He noted uncertainty around a damaged front pan and its effects on his handling, particularly in high-speed corners.

Day elaborated on the collision’s circumstances and his intentions.

Yeah, he [Zilisch] got right in front of me there and as soon as he did and crossed over my nose, I lost a little bit of what I had left, and he got in front of me where I was going to be. So yeah, I’m going to get no sympathy for that I guess, (based) off my track record, but it wasn’t intentional. I didn’t want to wreck him or have that happen.

-Corey Day, Hendrick Motorsports rookie

When asked about Zilisch’s call for an apology, Day did not object.

I got no problem going over there and talking to him,

Day said.

It was my mistake, whether I had a broken race car or not, so, you know, I’ll own up to it. I will apologize, no problem.

Context of the Incident Within the Season and Its Implications

This event highlights the tension inherent in close competition, especially involving rookies like Day who have already been at the center of controversy during this early stage of their careers. While Day demonstrated strong pace with back-to-back top fives, his aggressive driving style poses challenges within the series.

For Zilisch, the crash at COTA added to a string of difficulties, including brake failures that undermined a promising run. Meanwhile, Shane van Gisbergen’s dominant performance underscored the contrasting fortunes of teammates in the race.

The fallout from this incident could impact team dynamics at Hendrick Motorsports as they navigate the development of their rookie driver and manage expectations within the NASCAR O’Reilly Series. With both drivers determined to move forward, the coming races will be critical in shaping the trajectory of their season and their reputations.
