IndyCar driver Conor Daly, a close friend of Mario Andretti’s grandson Marco Andretti, recently shared remarkable stories about the legendary racer Mario Andretti. Daly provided insight into Mario’s daring spirit and how the motorsport icon continues embracing adrenaline-fueled activities well into his 80s.
With over a decade of experience in IndyCar, Conor Daly currently races for Juncos Hollinger Racing and has a history with Andretti Autosport, the team owned by Michael Andretti. Daly’s connection to the Andretti family strengthened through his friendship with Marco Andretti, who raced full-time for Andretti Autosport while Daly made a one-off appearance for the team during the 2019 Indy 500.
During an episode of the Mythfits podcast, Daly was asked to share memorable encounters with Mario Andretti, a former Formula 1 and IndyCar champion who remains active in motorsports despite being 85 years old. Daly openly praised the Andretti family, highlighting his experience racing with them and his personal friendship with Marco.
A rare glimpse of Mario Andretti’s adventurous side
Conor Daly recounted a vivid memory involving Mario Andretti that few outside their circle might know about. Mario, Marco, and their family reside in Pennsylvania, where they own a lakeside property filled with various recreational vehicles and equipment. Daly described Mario’s enthusiasm for unique gadgets and his love for pushing limits, even off the racetrack.

“They live in Pennsylvania, both Marco and Mario. And they live out in a little lake house. Mario’s got a lot of toys out there. He’s got four wheeler dirt bikes and ultra lights. The ultra light is like a lawn mower in the sky with two giant wings, one seat and a propeller behind it.” —Conor Daly
He went on to vividly depict one unforgettable moment when Mario soared over the lake in an ultra light aircraft, shirtless and flying low enough to astonish those on the water below.
“I’ll never forget, we’re out in the lake riding Jetski, or doing whatever, I think I was fishing at one point and Mario, all of a sudden, just appears about 50 feet off the ground, in this ultra light, shirtless, and just flying by us on the lake. I’m like, ‘Man this guy is so cool’. I don’t even know if there are seatbelts on this thing. But Mario Andretti is in an ultra light, banked in. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen,” he added.
Conor Daly honors Mario Andretti’s legendary status and family legacy
Mario Andretti’s racing career spans numerous disciplines, from Formula 1 to sprint car and stock car racing, making him one of the most versatile athletes in motorsport history. Daly expressed deep admiration for Mario’s relentless passion, fearless attitude, and ongoing involvement with racing, even at an age when many have long retired.
“I love Mario Andretti. I think as a human being, that guy is like just one of the true living gangsters. I feel like he should be in the movie ‘Goodfellas’. You know, an Italian-American guy, he’s got great hair, and he was driving two seater IndyCar till he was 85 or something crazy. You know, F1 champion, IndyCar champion. Michael and Marco Andretti, great son and great grandson. Just an incredible family.” —Conor Daly
Beyond his personal achievements, Mario Andretti holds a significant role in motorsport governance, having been appointed to the board of directors for the Cadillac F1 team. Michael Andretti stepped down as CEO of Andretti Global last year, while Marco Andretti remains active, often competing in the Indianapolis 500 as a one-off entrant.
Conor Daly’s anecdotes emphasize not only Mario Andretti’s undiminished love for high-speed thrills but also highlight the enduring influence of the Andretti family in motorsport’s competitive and cultural landscape. As Mario continues engaging with racing and aviation, his legacy remains a powerful inspiration to drivers like Daly and fans worldwide, signalling that passion for racing can transcend generations and age.
