Corey Heim Shocks Experts with Daytona Qualifying Streak

Corey Heim, fresh off a dominant 2025 season where he won 12 races and clinched the Truck Series championship, has made waves by qualifying for the 2026 Daytona 500. Representing 23XI Racing, Heim earned his place by recording one of the fastest time-trial laps among the eight Open entries during his first attempt, joining competitor Justin Allgaier in this elite group.

Qualifying Battles Highlight Heim’s Resilience Under Pressure

Heim’s ultimate starting position will be finalized during the Daytona Duels on Thursday night, but simply securing his entry has surprised many experts who doubted he would qualify. The process was far from straightforward, as Heim disclosed the mental challenge he faced during Round 2 of qualifying. He explained,

“I had to tell myself like 10 times before qualifying to remind myself of the RPMs and when to shift and stuff. With the trucks, we have our RPM number. I’ve almost got to integrate it into my brain at this point.”

I don’t have to look at the dash. Like, I hear the RPM on my shift, you know? It’s so wired to me,

Heim added.

Transitioning from his Truck Series experience to the Next Gen car demanded quick adaptation. Heim’s seamless adjustment was evident as he compiled a lap that placed him fifth fastest in Round 1, well within the required top 10 to proceed. Meanwhile, Allgaier ranked 14th, just ahead of Corey LaJoie, who missed the cut by only 0.004 seconds.

Strategic Outcome Secures Heim’s Daytona 500 Entry

The intense competition among Heim, Allgaier, and LaJoie could have led to a direct on-track battle for a race spot, an unusual scenario that caught Heim off guard. He remarked on the rarity of seeing three Open entries reach the final qualifying round together. Fortunately for Heim, both LaJoie and Allgaier fell short in subsequent runs, confirming Heim’s Daytona 500 berth.

Future Prospects for Heim at 23XI Racing

This breakthrough appearance marks only the beginning of Heim’s journey in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he is scheduled to compete in 12 races this season with 23XI Racing. His performance this week sets an important precedent for hopes of a full-time seat with the organization in the near future. The remainder of his qualifying week holds significant weight as Heim aims to build on this momentum.
