Heading into the new NASCAR Cup Series season, uncertainties swirled around Suarez’s position with Spire Motorsports. Yet, he responded by battling through adversity and finishing strong, sending a message to fans and critics alike.
Overcoming Challenges in Late-Race Drama
Although Suarez did not secure a victory, his comeback effort during the race’s concluding moments drew attention. After a difficult incident during the second overtime restart, he surged back through the competition, ultimately securing fifth place.
For the final overtime, Suarez started sixth and occupied third in the outside lane. His Spire teammate Carson Hocevar led the lane, with Ross Chastain positioned between them. However, the restart quickly became chaotic.
On the backstretch, Shane van Gisbergen moved below Suarez and then drifted upward into him as they approached Turn 3, threatening to end Suarez’s chances. Despite this setback, Suarez fought back aggressively, gaining momentum on the frontstretch in the final lap.
He capitalized on Hocevar’s pass on Bubba Wallace entering Turn 1 and surged through Turns 3 and 4, reclaiming his spot near the lead group and crossing the finish line in fifth place.

“I thought we were in an amazing spot,”
he noted, believing their outside lane position gave them a solid chance at winning. He suggested that some teammates might not have fully committed to working together when it mattered most.
“I feel like we could have done a little bit better,”
Suarez admitted.
“I felt that we gave that one away because we were in a perfect spot to execute.”
Despite his frustrations, he remained positive about the direction of his team.
As the season’s opening trio of events—including the Clash at Bowman Gray and a testing session at North Wilkesboro—have shown, Suarez feels confident in the car’s speed and capabilities so far.
“These guys have something good going on,”
he said.
“I’m very happy to be a part of this group.”
Spire Motorsports Builds Momentum Early in the Season
Currently, Spire Motorsports holds seventh place in the points standings after the first two points-paying events, a solid foundation as the season unfolds. Suarez senses forward progress and is eager to build on the early momentum.
Looking ahead, the upcoming race at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) excites him. He described it as one of his favorite tracks and anticipates another competitive showing.
“That’s one of my favorite racetracks and I know that we’re going to be in the fight once again,”
Suarez said.
“The wins are going to come. But we have to continue to focus on the little things.”
Pressure Mounts as Spire Considers Potential Changes
Suarez’s remarks take on added significance given recent revelations from NASCAR insider Jordan Bianchi. Bianchi reported that Spire Motorsports may contemplate upgrading the No. 7 car if Suarez’s performance falters.
Among the candidates mentioned is two-time Cup champion Kyle Busch, who currently competes in the Truck Series for Spire and is in a contract year with Richard Childress Racing. Busch’s recent results have been underwhelming, having not won a Cup race since June 2023 and missing the playoffs in successive seasons.
A switch to Spire could potentially benefit both Busch and the team if circumstances align.
Suarez’s Past Challenges Highlight Stakes for 2024
The 2025 season was difficult for Suarez, who finished without wins, posting just two top-five and seven top-10 finishes at Trackhouse Racing before departing after five years. He cannot afford a repetition of that year if he wants to secure his positioning in NASCAR.
