De la Rosa Hints 2026 Could Be Alonso’s Final F1 Season

Pedro de la Rosa, the Aston Martin ambassador and longtime teammate of Fernando Alonso, suggested that 2026 might mark the end of Alonso’s Formula 1 career. Speaking with DAZN and Cadena SER, de la Rosa encouraged fans to appreciate each race the two-time world champion competes in during his contract’s final year.

Alonso, who turns 45 this year, has openly stated that winning a third world title is his main goal. However, de la Rosa acknowledged the inevitable passage of time and the uncertainties surrounding driver movements in Formula 1.

Support and Uncertainty Surround Alonso’s Future

De la Rosa emphasized the importance of taking Alonso’s remaining races one at a time, highlighting the support Alonso receives from Aston Martin. He said,

“I know it’s a cliché, but more than ever we have to take it one race at a time,”

and added,

“The first thing is to enjoy every race Fernando runs, because we don’t know if they’ll be his last, but there’s no doubt that we in the team will give him our full support.”

He also praised Alonso’s consistency, stating,

“The market is the market, but Fernando gives you the certainty that what you have is what it is, and very few drivers in the world can offer that.”

Aston Martin’s Long-Term Vision for 2026 and Beyond

De la Rosa called for patience regarding Aston Martin’s upcoming 2026 campaign, which involves major changes such as the involvement of renowned designer Adrian Newey, Honda’s power unit, and significant backing from owner Lawrence Stroll. He highlighted the challenge ahead, saying,

“We need to be calm and realistic, right? Realistic that the challenge is enormous,”

and recognized how high-profile partners create both hope and pressure:

“Because having all these names, having all these partners, is very good, it’s a good sign, but it also puts extra pressure on you to win now.”

Despite the optimism, de la Rosa reminded that success in Formula 1 takes time and should not be expected immediately:

“This is difficult in Formula 1, therefore, a touch of realism and calm, patience, understanding that this is a long road, that it won’t be easy, but that we do have all the ingredients.”

Uncertain Outlook for Alonso’s Career

On Alonso’s longevity in the sport, de la Rosa expressed mixed feelings, recalling his own surprise at Alonso deciding to continue:

“In 2024 I thought he was retiring, and here we are in 2026, so now I don’t know what to say,”

he said with a laugh. This uncertainty leaves the anticipation of Alonso’s career finish open-ended, underscoring the significance of every race he competes in moving forward.
