De Tomaso’s P900 Revives Old Formula 1 V12 Roar

De Tomaso is preparing to launch its P900 supercar, powered by a new naturally aspirated V12 engine developed in partnership with ItalTecnica, designed specifically for track performance. This engine aims to bring back the distinctive Old Formula 1 V12 sound, emphasizing both power and acoustic presence.

Details of the V12 Engine Behind the P900

The heart of the P900 is a 7.0-liter V12 engine featuring a 65-degree V configuration, equipped with an eight-stage dry sump lubrication system to ensure optimal performance under racing conditions. Constructed with high-strength internal components, the engine includes a solid billet aluminum crankcase, forged connecting rods, and ultra-lightweight pistons.

Its valvetrain comprises two overhead camshafts per bank and four titanium valves for each cylinder, complemented by a carbon fiber intake system that helps reduce overall engine weight to less than 441 pounds (200 kilograms). The engine delivers 888 horsepower at roughly 9,500 rpm, with a maximum redline near 10,200 rpm, channeling power solely to the rear wheels via a sequential Xtrac gearbox.

Background and Evolution of the P900 Project

Unveiled in 2022, the P900 was initially planned to use a Capricorn-built V12 engine weighing 485 pounds and capable of revving to 12,300 rpm. However, De Tomaso has adjusted its approach, acknowledging that

“vehicle has unfolded against the backdrop of a rapidly changing automotive landscape.”

The company opted against electrification, focusing instead on an engine with a distinct character that prioritizes immediate throttle response and rich sound quality alongside raw power figures.

“powertrain with a true identity, one that prioritized response and amplified acoustics as much as measurable power output.”

The engine is intended for enthusiasts who

“remember the era of Formula 1 V12’s defining Sundays, when noise was not a byproduct, but the defining signature of a marque.”

Upcoming Updates and Anticipated Launch

De Tomaso is set to present a refreshed version of the P900 later this year, which will include visual and aerodynamic enhancements. Although the company has not confirmed an exact release date, these updates are eagerly awaited by the 18 customers who have reserved the car, signaling a near-term arrival for this track-focused supercar.
