NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin shared in a recent interview with Motorsports.com how team owner Joe Gibbs provided crucial support to his family following a devastating house fire in December 2025. As Hamlin prepares for the 2026 Daytona 500, he recounted the emotional and practical assistance Gibbs offered during this difficult time.
After losing his father, Dennis Hamlin, in the fire and with his mother, Mary, suffering severe injuries, Denny highlighted how Gibbs’s care went beyond professional boundaries. While business partner Michael Jordan also extended support, Hamlin said he mainly leaned on Gibbs emotionally due to the personal connection.
Joe Gibbs’s Compassionate Presence During Family Crisis
Hamlin revealed that Joe Gibbs was the first to arrive at the hospital on the night of the tragedy. Despite the distance between their homes, Gibbs consistently visited Dennis Hamlin after he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. The team owner not only spent time with Dennis but also prayed with him, providing comfort and companionship in the father’s final months.
“He made a point to go, if not every week, every other week to visit over the last year, talking stories and praying with him. You know, my dad was really trying to get right with the Lord you know, over the last year and felt like Joe really helped with that,” the #11 driver said.
“And you know, Joe, it’s not like my parents lived right down the street. Joe took the time out of his day to go well out of his way to go visit and share stories. My dad really appreciate that,” he added.
Hamlin is gradually regaining focus as he mourns his father’s loss while preparing to compete in the 2026 season. His determination has been vital to his recovery, demonstrated by his recent fifth-place finish at the Cook Out Clash held at Bowman Gray Stadium, a 200-lap race that tested his resolve and skill.

How Parental Sacrifices Shaped Hamlin’s NASCAR Journey
Reflecting on his earlier career during a 2019 interview on NBC Sports, Hamlin expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices his parents made to support his racing ambitions. He recounted the financial struggles his family endured, including selling assets to fund racing fuel and tires necessary for his development as a driver.
“It’s really a combination between my two parents. I would say that, you know, my dad was the tough side, and my mom was the little bit of the softer side, but they both made a lot of struggles and sacrifices to keep funding my racing. I mean, we had to sell off a lot of assets to buy race tires and race fuel and stuff like that.”
Hamlin first appeared in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2005, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, and he has remained with the team ever since. Piloting the #11 Toyota Camry XSE, he has built an outstanding career including 60 wins, 248 top-five finishes, 376 top-ten placements, and 48 pole positions over 721 starts.
The steadfast support from team owner Joe Gibbs during personal hardship, combined with his parents’ early sacrifices, has helped Hamlin maintain his competitive edge and emotional strength. As the 2026 season approaches, fans and colleagues alike will watch to see how this resilience translates on the track, continuing Hamlin’s legacy within NASCAR.
