Denny Hamlin to Race Despite Aggravated Shoulder Injury

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Denny Hamlin announced on Wednesday that he recently worsened a shoulder injury but intends to continue racing as the NASCAR Cup Series season opener approaches. The driver’s update was shared just hours before the Cook Out Clash preseason event at Bowman Gray Stadium was scheduled to begin.

The 45-year-old driver, representing Joe Gibbs Racing, revealed the challenges he faces amid both personal loss and physical pain as NASCAR’s new season nears.

Struggles Following Career and Personal Setbacks

Hamlin experienced a heartbreaking end to the previous season when his hopes of claiming his first NASCAR Cup Series championship slipped away in the final laps of the November 2 season finale. His pursuit of victory had special significance, as he aimed to honor his father, Dennis Hamlin, who had been in poor health.

Tragically, Dennis Hamlin passed away on December 28 in a house fire that also caused injuries to Hamlin’s mother, Mary Lou. The emotional toll of this event adds to the difficulties surrounding Hamlin’s current condition.

Details of Hamlin’s Shoulder Injury and Recovery Challenges

Hamlin explained that he recently fell while sorting through the debris at his parents’ home after the fire, aggravating a shoulder injury that had previously undergone surgery in November 2023. He recognized that the shoulder had not fully healed before this incident.

Addressing the injury and his plans moving forward, Hamlin said,

“So I’m gonna have to go the rest of the season the way I was before there, I don’t think that it ever healed properly. Just noticed some issues, really kind of right after the season. It just was nagging me a little bit. Took a little fall at my mom’s house, going through all the rubble and stuff and just didn’t feel right. Got it re-scanned and re-tore it again.”

Hamlin acknowledged that the ideal timeframe for a surgery followed by a lengthy recovery has passed, making it impossible to address the injury fully before the season starts.

Commitment to Racing Despite Physical and Emotional Hurdles

After the season finale at Phoenix Raceway last year, Hamlin had expressed frustration about his shoulder, stating,

“I don’t even think about the race car right now. Just yeah, I’m gonna need some time on this one.”

Despite this, he returned to the track on Wednesday, ready to compete in The Clash, a non-points event held at Bowman Gray Stadium that he has won four times previously.

This decision underscores Hamlin’s determination to remain active in the sport amid his ongoing recovery and personal difficulties.

Implications for Hamlin and NASCAR Season Ahead

Denny Hamlin’s choice to race while managing a worsening shoulder injury highlights both his resilience and the physical demands of professional racing. With the NASCAR Cup Series season about to begin, his condition may influence his performance as well as his team’s strategies throughout the competition.

His determination to push forward despite pain and loss is likely to resonate with fans and fellow competitors alike, emphasizing the human challenges behind the sport’s high-speed action. Updates on Hamlin’s status are expected as the season progresses.
