Dylan Ferrandis, competing for the Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati Factory Racing team, will miss this weekend’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross event in Indianapolis after sustaining a thumb injury at Daytona. Despite medical tests showing no fractures or ligament tears, the French rider’s grip weakness during practice led to the decision to skip the race to avoid risking further harm.
Details on Injury and Impact on Race Participation
Ferrandis suffered a hyperextended thumb in a crash during the 450SX heat race at Daytona International Speedway. Following the incident, he attempted to compete in the main event but experienced another crash that forced him to withdraw early. An MRI conducted after the event ruled out broken bones or ligament injuries but revealed significant swelling, fluid buildup, and bruising in the thumb.
During Thursday’s practice session, Ferrandis attempted to test his ability to race but encountered immediate difficulties with his grip strength. Knowing the demands of Supercross racing, he concluded it would be unsafe to compete at Indianapolis this weekend.
I had an MRI on Tuesday and the results were positive with no broken bones and no ligament damage,
said Ferrandis.
I tried to ride today (Thursday) before I was planning to fly to Indy, but right away on the first lap I felt my thumb was not capable of pushing or holding onto the handlebars, so I have decided not to race this weekend. It is very frustrating and I am very bummed for myself and the team.
Recovery Plans Amid Supercross Season Break
With the series scheduled for a break following the Indianapolis round, Ferrandis and other riders who are injured or in recovery often utilize this period to focus on rehabilitation. Ferrandis intends to use the upcoming weeks to rest and undergo treatment aimed at returning to full fitness. The goal is for him to rejoin the AMA Supercross Championship for Round 10 in Birmingham, Alabama, where he hopes to resume competition at a high level.
This injury update on Dylan Ferrandis underscores the physical challenges faced by riders during the intense Supercross season. Missing the Indy round affects both the rider’s championship aspirations and the Ducati team’s lineup, highlighting the importance of recovery in a sport where grip strength and control are vital for performance and safety.
