Enea Bastianini’s KTM Struggles Worsen at Thailand GP

Italian rider Enea Bastianini faced significant challenges during the Thailand Grand Prix at Buriram, as his KTM motorcycle’s performance issues persisted. The Tech3 competitor struggled notably with fifth gear, experiencing severe vibrations that disrupted his ability to compete effectively. These mechanical difficulties left Bastianini once again lagging behind rivals, a frustrating repetition of problems from the previous season, intensifying his ongoing battle to match the frontrunners.

Mechanical Problems and Impact on Race Performance

Throughout the race, the KTM’s uncontrollable shaking became a major obstacle for Bastianini, forcing him to frequently ease off the throttle when shifting into fifth gear.

“It was incredibly difficult on the straights because the bike was shaking uncontrollably,”

Bastianini revealed after the race in Buriram. He added,

“I started feeling these vibrations on Saturday, and we couldn’t pinpoint the cause. It might be the wind or the heat, but I really don’t know.”

This unpredictable instability severely affected his riding, especially during critical moments when speed and precision shifting are vital. Bastianini acknowledged the struggle to manage the bike’s behavior in traffic, saying,

“It was tough to manage, especially when I was in the slipstream of others.”

Despite these complications, he attempted to locate some positives, noting a slight improvement over the previous day but admitting,

“It was a tougher race than I anticipated.”

Wider Team Disparities and Technical Challenges

The issues were not isolated to Bastianini alone but were emblematic of a broader disparity within Tech3, particularly in comparison to the official KTM factory team. Nicolas Goyon, associated with Tech3, emphasized the performance gap that was apparent throughout the weekend. Bastianini himself observed differences among riders on KTM machines, stating,

“Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder seem to suffer less than Maverick Viñales and me.”

He elaborated on a conversation with Acosta, explaining,

“I spoke a bit with Pedro, and he feels it too, but not as severely.”

Reflecting on the conditions after the sprint race, Bastianini added,

“With the heat, it was horrible for both me and Maverick, and nothing was working for us. Yet, on the flip side, Pedro won the race. It’s strange and truly incredible.”

This contrast highlighted the technical inconsistencies affecting some riders more than others, raising questions within the team regarding bike setup and adaptation to challenging environmental factors.

Qualifying Struggles and Race Strategy Limitations

Goyon commented on Bastianini’s difficulties in qualifying, which left him starting well behind the leading pack, limiting his options during the race.

“He had a fairly decent second half of the race, but starting from so far back, there’s not much you can do,”

Goyon said. These setbacks compounded the overall disappointment surrounding Bastianini’s weekend and underscored the obstacles in securing strong race results.

Reflecting on his performance, Bastianini expressed his frustration and disappointment despite slight progress.

“My feelings have been similar to last year, although the result has been worse,”

he admitted. This acknowledgment points to the persistence of unresolved problems that continue to hamper his competitiveness.

Looking Ahead: Can Tech3 Overcome Current Difficulties?

As the MotoGP season advances, the ongoing technical and performance struggles faced by Enea Bastianini and the Tech3 team cast doubt on their ability to close the gap with factory KTM riders. The challenges highlighted in Thailand, especially under intense heat and demanding race conditions, emphasize the urgent need for solutions. The pressure is mounting for Bastianini and his crew to improve machine reliability and rider comfort if they hope to contend consistently at the front this season.
