Fabio Quartararo has candidly acknowledged that his expectations for Yamaha’s new V4-powered M1 motorcycle were overly optimistic as the team prepares for the 2026 MotoGP season. During pre-season testing at Buriram, the French champion revealed that Yamaha’s bike was significantly behind rivals, trailing by approximately eight tenths of a second on long runs. This setback has intensified concerns about Yamaha’s competitiveness, especially amid rumors about Quartararo potentially moving to Honda at the end of the year. The development troubles cast doubt on the future prospects of both the rider and the manufacturer.
Inside Yamaha’s Garage: Acknowledging the Reality
As the MotoGP community looks forward to the Thailand Grand Prix season opener, Quartararo aimed to temper expectations after practice sessions highlighted Yamaha’s ongoing difficulties. Speaking on the situation within the team, he admitted,
I had a conversation with people from my team, engineers, but I think that I was a bit too optimistic about the potential of the bike.
This reflection reveals not only his disappointment but also the recognition of the depth of the challenges Yamaha currently faces in maintaining pace with their rivals.
Testing Challenges and Performance Setbacks
Despite the issues, Quartararo showed flashes of competitiveness by posting a respectable 16th fastest time in a one-lap effort, missing the top 10 by only three tenths of a second. Even so, he was realistic about the gulf to leading manufacturers, stating, We are still too far, underscoring how quickly the competition has advanced following two days of intense track testing.
The Yamaha rider also described the difficult weather conditions, including rain and wind, that disrupted practice runs and forced strategic tire decisions. He explained,
We decided to start with new tyres quite early because it was also raining and windy, and we didn’t have new tyres at the end because we used those early,
highlighting the tactical complications that limited Yamaha’s ability to optimize their testing program.
The High Stakes as the Season Begins
With the 2026 season soon to begin, Quartararo remains determined to extract every bit of performance possible from Yamaha’s struggling machine. However, the severity of Yamaha’s current slump casts a long shadow over the team’s ambitions. The coming races will be crucial not only for Quartararo’s future at Yamaha but also for the manufacturer’s standing in a fiercely competitive MotoGP field. Whether Yamaha can overcome these hurdles or if Quartararo will seek fresh opportunities elsewhere remains a major storyline as the season unfolds.
