Fabio Quartararo, the 2021 MotoGP world champion, enters this season under intense scrutiny amid concerns about Yamaha’s latest V4 prototype. The French rider has openly expressed serious reservations about the bike’s performance just days before the championship’s start, while also addressing speculation around his future, confirming he has already made a significant choice regarding 2027.
Current Challenges and Performance Issues with Yamaha
Quartararo showed clear honesty when discussing the present situation at a recent Speedweek interview. He remarked,
“I don’t think we’re in a position, at the moment, to think about a result. I have no expectations; I’m simply trying to stay calm and make the best of this situation.”
He reflected on last year’s September bike tests in Barcelona, noting the results were underwhelming but understandable given the project’s infancy. Unfortunately, he stated the same feeling persists now, with no major performance jump as hoped.
Despite numerous adjustments, Quartararo remains frustrated by the lack of progress.
“You can’t imagine the number of settings and things we tried at Sepang and Buriram. But the sensations have remained the same. It’s up to the engineers to find a new and completely different solution to finally have a benchmark, which is still not the case. Here in the race simulation, we were eight-tenths of a second slower per lap compared to last year’s tests,”
he disclosed.
Areas Needing Improvement on the Yamaha Bike
Quartararo highlighted several critical performance issues, particularly in areas related to handling and electronics.
“More than just a reference point, we need to improve the performance of the motorcycle. We’re still very slow. We need to improve not only top speed, but also corner entry precision, front tire feel, and we also need to make progress with the electronics. There’s so much to improve. Our current priority must be grip and corner entry precision. The feel of the front tire we had with the inline four-cylinder motorcycle was incredible,”
he explained, emphasizing the gap between expectations and reality.
Quartararo’s Confirmed Decision for 2027 Offers Mental Clarity
Addressing his long-term plans, Quartararo revealed that he has resolved his 2027 future, which has alleviated some pressure this season.
“I can’t tell you much about my future, but I’ve made my decision. That’s a mental relief; I have nothing more to add,”
he said. While he declined to specify details, his remarks suggest a conclusion to the growing rumors linking him to Honda prior to preseason testing in Sepang.
Implications for the Season and Beyond
As the MotoGP season gets underway, Quartararo’s frank assessment of Yamaha’s challenges and his clear mental focus on his 2027 direction will influence both his performance and the dynamics of the paddock. His call for significant technical improvements signals ongoing pressures on Yamaha’s engineering team, while his future commitment will be closely watched by fans and competitors alike. The coming months will show how these factors shape the championship battle and Quartararo’s career trajectory.
