Scuderia Ferrari kicked off the 2026 Formula 1 season with a strong showing at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, securing a podium finish that energized fans and the team alike. Charles Leclerc claimed third place while Lewis Hamilton finished just behind in fourth, together earning 27 points and laying a solid foundation for Ferrari’s championship campaign.
Exciting Battle for the Lead in Melbourne
The Melbourne race delivered exhilarating moments early on, especially a fierce contest between Leclerc and George Russell for the lead position. Ferrari’s team principal, Fred Vasseur, described the intense opening laps as a sign of the new era’s vitality in Formula 1.
I think this was a very exciting race for our sport,
Fred Vasseur explained.
There were some pessimistic comments about this new Formula 1 ahead of the season, but I believe the start and the first ten laps were among the most thrilling we have seen in the last ten years.

Strong Launch and Tactical Decisions
Ferrari’s cars launched perfectly at the start, with Charles Leclerc taking the lead into the first corner and Lewis Hamilton advancing to third by the first sector. The battle between Leclerc and Russell was immediate and intense, with Russell briefly overtaking Leclerc on lap two before Leclerc reclaimed first place on the following lap. This competition persisted until lap 12 when a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed due to Isack Hadjar’s stalled car on track.

During the VSC, Mercedes chose to pit Russell and Antonelli to fit Hard tires, but Ferrari stuck to their original strategy and kept their drivers on track, prioritizing the planned race approach over opportunistic stops.
Strategic Choices Shape Final Standings
Leclerc pitted on lap 25 to switch to Hard tires, with Hamilton following three laps later. After both stops, the Ferrari drivers settled into third and fourth places, holding these positions until the race concluded. Vasseur acknowledged that the results reflected the best possible outcome given the current gap to the frontrunners.
From our point of view, third and fourth place is a good result,
he noted.
After qualifying, we had seen there was a performance gap with the cars in front, so this was probably the best outcome we could achieve in the race.
?Fred Vasseur, Ferrari Team Principal
Vasseur also elaborated on the decision to avoid pitting during the Virtual Safety Car, explaining that Ferrari focused on optimizing their planned strategy despite some unfortunate timing.
We decided not to pit because we were focused on our optimal strategy,
he said.
The pit lane was closed just when we could have stopped.

Looking Ahead to the Rest of the Season
Although the opening round provided a clear view of the current competitive landscape, Ferrari remains confident and committed to advancing their performance as the season progresses. Vasseur emphasized the lengthy season ahead and the need for continual improvements.
The season is very long, and in the coming months we will need to improve many aspects,
he concluded. ?Fred Vasseur, Ferrari Team Principal
The Melbourne race not only showcased the excitement brought by the new regulations but also highlighted where teams, including Ferrari and Mercedes, must focus their development to close the gap to the top contenders. With a solid start, Ferrari’s strong start 2026 efforts position them well for the challenges ahead in this vibrant Formula 1 season.
