Formula 1 has confirmed a contract extension with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya that will keep the venue on the world racing stage until at least 2032. This renewed agreement means the Barcelona circuit will host Grands Prix in 2028, 2030, and 2032, alongside the previously scheduled event for 2026, ensuring continued prominence for the location in the Formula 1 Barcelona Extension.
Shared Hosting Arrangement Between Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps
The contract introduces a new rotation system between two iconic European tracks. While both Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Belgium’s Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps will feature on the 2026 calendar, beginning the following year they will alternate annually. Spa-Francorchamps will host races in odd years such as 2027, 2029, and 2031, whereas Barcelona will take on the even years. This arrangement represents a strategic shift in Formula 1’s focus within its European heartland.
The event will also receive a rebranding: starting this year, the race held in Barcelona will be called the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, with the Spanish Grand Prix title transferring to the new Madrid street circuit.
Investment and Growth at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali praised the investments made to enhance the circuit and fan experience.
The team have invested heavily in the circuit and hosted fantastic fan festivals, so we look forward to seeing how they continue to develop the experience,
said Domenicali.

Pol Gibert, CEO of Circuits de Catalunya SL, underlined the economic importance of the race for the Catalonia region.
We welcome the renewal of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Catalonia, at least until 2032.
He added,
This renewal is the result of a strong relationship and close collaboration and represents a very important step in further consolidating Catalonia as a key fixture on the international calendar,
as part of the region’s long-term commitment to sport and tourism.
Recent enhancements include the introduction of the Circuit Rooftop, a state-of-the-art hospitality area overlooking critical turns on the track, and a significant sustainability initiative incorporating solar panel installations throughout the venue. These upgrades demonstrate a drive to modernize operations and provide a high-quality experience.
Enduring Economic and Cultural Benefits for Catalonia
The Formula 1 Barcelona Extension is more than just about racing; it brings substantial economic advantages, with estimates suggesting over EUR 300 million (AUD 503 million) generated per event. The 2025 race weekend attracted approximately 300,000 spectators, marked by an exciting McLaren one-two finish led by driver Oscar Piastri.
Cultural integration efforts continue, with the Plaça de Catalunya fan festival playing a pivotal role in embedding the Grand Prix into the city’s vibrant lifestyle. These fan events enhance the connection between the race and the local community, offering entertainment and engagement beyond the circuit itself.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Barcelona’s Status Within Formula 1
The contract extension secures Barcelona’s standing as a key destination in Formula 1’s evolving calendar, as the sport seeks to balance tradition with innovation and global expansion. The alternation with Spa-Francorchamps preserves both circuits’ presence while allowing for logistical flexibility and audience diversification.
With sustained infrastructure investments and increased fan engagement, the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit is positioned to remain a vital part of Formula 1’s European core for many more years. The partnership reflects a broader strategy to maintain economic growth, promote sustainability, and uphold Catalonia’s reputation on the international motorsport stage.
