Ferrari is giving Lewis Hamilton greater influence over the design of its car for the 2026 Formula 1 season following a difficult first year together in 2025. After failing to secure any podium finishes last year, Hamilton expressed frustration with his limited input on the vehicle, leading him to privately submit detailed demands to the team. While those requests were largely ignored in 2025, Ferrari is now responding by aiming to develop the SF-26 into a more predictable and comfortable car that better suits Hamilton’s preferences.
Potential Impact of Hamilton’s Contributions on Ferrari’s Performance
Both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc had emphasized the need for improvements after a disappointing winless 2025. With revamped 2026 regulations and a machine more tailored to his driving style, Hamilton may have a stronger platform for success this season. He has reportedly found a more comfortable way to drive the car, indicating that some of his demands have been met. However, this behind-the-scenes involvement has reportedly caused tension within the team, particularly with Ferrari’s team principal Fred Vasseur.
Fred Vasseur’s Displeasure with Hamilton’s Handling Requests
Journalist Ralf Bach from F1-Insider revealed insights into the ongoing dynamics at Ferrari, noting that although Leclerc remains the more comfortable driver in the SF-26, Hamilton is pushing hard for adjustments to suit his style. Bach explained that this insistence has left Vasseur “totally dissatisfied.”
“Not this time, but during the last test in Barcelona, they said that Leclerc just gets on really well with the Ferrari, that he drives very harmoniously, hardly makes any driving mistakes, really is at one with the car right from the start,”
said Bach.
“Whereas with Hamilton, it’s a continuation of last year, he brakes too late, he doesn’t know exactly when to brake, how to accelerate.”
Bach further described the situation during testing:
“So there’s this harmony with the car, and when I look at the times, whether it’s test drives or Leclerc, it’s just those three, four, five tenths, for whatever reason. I assume that one drives in the morning and the track isn’t as fast, the other in the afternoon, but somehow the average is always three or four tenths faster than Hamilton.”
“That goes so it’s going in the same direction as last year, and then of course you hear a bit of gossip behind the scenes that Fred Vasseur, the team boss, is totally dissatisfied with Lewis because he’s demanding that Ferrari respond to him regarding the car’s handling.”
Challenges Ahead for Hamilton Amid Ferrari’s 2026 Strategy
As Hamilton and Ferrari prepare for the 2026 season, the seven-time world champion is working behind the scenes to adapt to the SF-26 under the new regulations. His goal is to overcome the struggles of last year and contend for an eighth championship. Yet, current setups seem to favor Leclerc, indicating that the Monegasque driver will remain a strong competitor within the team.
Alex Albon has expressed optimism that the regulation changes will benefit Hamilton’s driving style, a sentiment shared by Ferrari’s passionate tifosi. Nonetheless, speculation around Hamilton’s future continues, with his contract expiring at the end of the year and questions rising about whether 2026 might be his final season. Should he fail to deliver strong performances, Hamilton could decide to retire from Formula 1, marking the end of an illustrious career.
The pressure mounts on both Hamilton and Ferrari to produce a championship-winning car for their devoted fans, making this season a critical juncture for all parties involved.
